First of all: I loved koe no katachi. It was emotional, it was dramatic and it was heartwarming.

But in the scene, where Shouko was climbing the balcony while Shouya is standing at the entrance of the appartment, I couldn't stop laughing at the fact that he bothered to take his shoes of before entering the appartment completely.
Like: what is worse? Propably the most important person in your life jumping from a balcony, or dirtying her appartment in the attempt to save her?
I don't know the answer to be honest, but apparently my man Shouya had his priorities god damn straight

its great and all but now I can’t unsee this and it has me thinking. What have you done? On a serious note its hard to spot suicidal tendencies in people, because eventually they get so used to those thoughts they just give up on acting out on it and accept that they have nothing to live for
Being human is making mistakes.

The thing that made me laugh was him tripping over that goddamn chair, they really didn't have anything better to stall him.

But when he was entering the house he didn't notice what was happening (also in a situation like that it's common to not respond efficient if you aren't expecting it)

If you are from South East Asia, then I request you, when you will start an anime, you search if it is available on Muse Asia and Ani-one Asia, before looking through piracy websites

this is a hardly a cultural ignorance thing here, others explained it well, he didn't know what was going on, so he just takes his shoes off as normal, I'm sure if a Japanese person knew someone who was important to them was about to kill themselves or try to on the balcony, they'd run with their shoes on.

Y'all who tried to explain to me that it's an asian thing to take the shoes of really thought you did something there 🤡

Also: "He wasn't sure what she was doing" yeah sure, just chillin' with the boys on the balcony, I do this like every friday. There aren't like soooo many reasons, why a person would do that lmao
The author decided to add this - aswell as the tripping over the chair as @Ginpin mentioned - to enhance the suspense but it was poorly executed imo

Taking off shoes is a very asian thing, I am assuming u r American so I can see why you thought it was funny, but as an asian I can say it's really uncomfortable to walk indoors with shoes and it becomes an automatic response to take off ur shoes while entering a house.

He didn't know that she wanted to free herself from life actually. It was only when he had nearly finished keeping his shoes down that he noticed

Yo homies stop explaining me asian custom lmao first I KNOW IT GOD DAMN; I TOO TAKE MY SHOES OF BEFORE ENTERING THE HOUSE, but the situation we are talking about in the movie is not your every day coming home and kiss your mama on the cheeks, there is literally somebody climbing a balcony to fucking jump down for fuck sake
Second: I ain't no fucking 'merican what the fuck

Well sorry for assuming u r 'merican and explains asian customs...
But that's literally it...that's the only reason he took off his shoes...habit. also he was in someone else's house.
also as others have pointed out, realistically you wouldn't immediately realise someone is trying to jump off their roof.
PS:- I just looked at the manga and turns out he didn't take off his shoes in the manga...
I guess Naoko Yamada decided he needs to take his shoes off.
PS 2:- I liked the scene more in the manga anyways...coz there is no forced collision with a chair and the moment Ishida grabs her he starts panicking about what he should do to save her, he looks at the river at the bottom and starts calculating whether the fall will be actually dangerous or not...I just wish they had kept more of these monologues in the movie.

Take a deep breath lol anyways taking off the shows is the first thing you would do as an automatic action, it's shortly after/during that they take action. It's reasonable, the chair is definitely more forced.

Can't apply real life logic to anime though, the chair and the shoes are just devices to cause the feeling of panic and illustrate the scramble. Opening the door and laser beam running straight to the balcony would have felt much more empty and forced.

Summarizing A Silent Voice:
When she slides into yo dms and you slide right out so she slides off the balcony

You’re not the only one who laughed, so don’t worry about that. I felt kinda terrible at first for laughing at parts and not shedding a single tear, but I stopped caring. A lot of people might find it heartless for someone to laugh and make jokes during a movie like that, but we just coping ✌️😗

You didn't read the Writers forum right. He's not saying it was weird for him to take off his shoes, but rather instead of trying to stop shoko he was busy taking off his shoes. However people explained that at first he didn't know her plans were to jump off the balcony. And Even I who has this in our culture (to take off our shoes before entering a house) i wouldn't find it "ignorant" even if someone found it weird that we do this, which isn't even what op was doing...

imagine if he was holding his phone or a vase on his hand, he'd probably put it down on a near counter instead of just letting it fall to the ground/carry it right?

i think its similar to that. he was in shock, but also confused, and like how he just ran hurried up there without thinking much, he also took off his shoes, something that he's so used to doing with the same reason. he didnt think of it at all

(im making this whole shit up LMFAO random high school girl with no sort of knowledge abt psychology so just take my comment/analysis with a grain of salt)

You have to understand that for a Japanese person, who for every day of their life, practically from birth until their current age, have taken their shoes off in entry ways, not just at home but including when going to school, it is a habit so deeply ingrained you can’t expect anything else. It doesn’t matter what the situation is, that take-off your shoes muscle memory is not going away

Well, apparently he didn't take off his shoes in the manga, so this scene is propably a poorly written idea of the director or other staff member to enhance suspense.

Lmao you have a point but keep in mind that he most likely had a very deeply ingrained habit to take shoes off before entering seeing how thats practically tradition (?) In Japan and everyone does it. Plus he was probably very confused lol. But Im surprised you noticed that and werent invested in the moment insteal lol

It shows how strong the Japanese culture is! If was me, and of course, aware that a important person is about to commit something like that I would run without hesitation...
