Author’s Note: To those who follow me closely, you may have already known this was coming. But I’m happy to begin my second long form storyline in time for Alpha and Omega’s 14th Anniversary a week from now. Before you start reading, be perfectly aware of one thing. This is an AU story where the only thing changed in the original movie is that Kate agreed to marry Garth. This movie takes place only a mere few months after the wedding. Without further adieu, let’s begin.
—————————————————————-
It was the first night of September in Jasper National Park. Located in Alberta, it stood as one of the foremost parks in North America. A place where nature could thrive without much human intervention. Several packs of wolves lived in this place, with the largest of which living in the western valley which offered fertile hunting grounds and spectacular views. For Kate, it was a prison.
From the moment she and Garth exchanged vows and united the Eastern and Western packs, everything began to go wrong. Tony’s words of sincerity were nothing but a lie, and not even a few hours after they returned home, he began to act like he was in charge, with his wolves fiercely loyal to him. It started as arguments between Tony and Kate’s father Winston, which began to get more and more heated. One day, he snapped at Lilly, who he demanded to help comb his fur with a pine cone. Her mother finally had enough, but was met by several alphas. A fight broke out. Kate jumped in to protect her mother, but Winston managed to call his wolves back. At that point, Kate knew her father made a mistake in making a deal with that wolf.
From then on, the easterners began to force their beliefs on everyone. The omegas began to be treated like slaves, and Kate was kept a close eye on. That was, until Tony approached Kate and his son Garth, very subtly demanding the two start producing pups. Otherwise something may happen to someone Kate cared about. With her paws tied and in fear for her family’s life, she was forced into another life changing situation. Kate and Garth mated soon after, and Kate became pregnant.
A few months passed after that, and as a dark thunderstorm rolled over the valley, Kate waddled towards the entrance of her and Garth’s den, watching as rain began to pour outside. Her belly was swollen full of the litter Garth and she had been forced into conceiving. She was big, even for a litter-bearing species like her own. The pack healers predicted she was carrying three pups at the very least, more likely four or five. It was a feeling Kate was excited to stop feeling. She was an alpha and she was just tired of lugging around this extra weight which made her back and joints sore. But now wasn’t the time to complain about her pregnancy. Garth had heard it all before, and now it was time to be focused.
Kate let out a soft huff as she stared out into the rain. The sound of moving to her left made her face turn towards Garth, who sat on his haunches beside her. His emerald eyes couldn’t dare look into Kate’s. Kate knew why, and while Garth wasn’t the wolf she fell in love with, she’d grown to love him over the past few months as a friend. Besides her sister and mother, Garth was the one wolf she could be herself around. While at first she resented him somewhat, after she’d become pregnant, she realized he was just as much of a prisoner as she was. To Tony, Garth was a tool to immortalize himself. He felt Garth was too weak to lead his pack, so he would raise grandpups that would. His blood and the blood of Winston’s best. Once Kate realized this, they began to open up more. It’s how Kate learned about her sister and Garth’s relationship, and it’s also where they began to plan their escape.
Coming up with a way to get out wasn’t difficult, but time wasn’t on Kate’s side. Day after day passed and the pups grew bigger than bigger. The plan was simple. Kate would sneak out one way, and Lilly would leave the other. Both would travel south and rendezvous at the American border. They’d then go into Idaho together and head to Sawtooth. Her abduction by the humans had turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The only problem was the pregnancy. She hadn’t started feeling any signs of labor yet, but she could feel in her soul and her belly that this wasn’t going to last much longer. She’d need to move fast, and more than anything; tonight was the night. It was now or never. She’d be leaving home, and it was very likely she wasn’t coming back anytime soon. Taking one last deep breath, she looked back to Garth for one final conversation.
“Garth, look at me.” Kate said softly and with sincerity, and didn’t continue until her mate listened. When he gazed into her hazel eyes, turned her body slowly towards him.
“If you have anything you want to say to me…now’s the time. This plan is a go. I can see it in your eyes..”
It took a moment, but the red wolf scrunched his nose up into a pained expression before he looked away from her eyes again. “I’m sorry. For all of this. For getting you pregnant, for letting myself be my father’s pawn…I should’ve done more for you. For Lilly. This is your home, and you shouldn’t have to be leaving it. If the smoke clears and you want nothing to do with me, I get it. I really do.” Garth was staring at his paws by now.
After a deep breath, Kate smiled slightly and bent her head closer to Garth’s.
“I forgive you. You know what he was going to do to Lilly if we hadn’t done. What’s done is done. Besides, maybe if I told my father I didn’t want this, maybe something else could’ve been worked out. I’m not a saint in all this either…but these ones, and Lilly…the ones we love…” Kate gazed back to her bulging belly, feeling some movement deep within. “…they’re what matter now. That includes you. We get one another, and I hope you’ll be part of your pups' lives someday...you deserve it…and Lilly deserves you.” Her smile grew as she used her snout to brush away a visible tear that appeared on Garth’s cheek. “You’re doing the right thing. Now…shall we?” Kate pointed her head outside, taking a deep breath to focus back up.
“Yeah…we shall. It’s rough out there so I’ll head over now to distract the guards in front of my father's den. Well, your old den. You get what I mean. Father might treat me like his personal heir maker, but these guys still have to listen to me.” Garth said as he stood up to his paws, ready to get out of the den.
Kate gave a nod. “Right. Just keep their heads pointed away from me. Lilly should’ve already snuck away from the valley by now.”
Garth would come to realize something, and furrowed his brow. “Wait, just how is Lilly going to know where to go? She’s never left Jasper.”
“Let’s just say I know a couple of friends who I can trust to show her the way to the rendezvous. She’ll be alright. On your mark.” Kate said shortly, eager to get going.
Garth nodded and then sighed. “One more thing.” He turned to Kate’s side and leaned his nose in, giving the side of her bloated belly a loving press and nuzzle. If you guys can hear me in there, just know you’ve got an awesome mom, and if you never see me when you’re out, know she’ll do a kickass job without me.”
Kate looked back and smiled warmly, feeling her pups stirr from the interaction. It was a feeling like no other, and one she didn’t entirely dislike despite how over this pregnancy she was. “Your father’s gonna be just fine. He just likes to undersell himself now that he married me. Oh, by the way, Garth. I think this counts as a divorce.” Kate breathed a chuckle as Garth’s eyes widened.
“Heh, guess that’s true. That definitely could’ve gone worse. Now…I’ll see you around Kate.” He moved up towards her face, and the two shared one last affectionate nuzzle. “Go find that omega. Have a good life with him.”
Kate sighed. “Don’t die. Please.”
Garth then trotted out into the rain and after gaming himself to get used to the wetness that now showed into his fur, he swayed his tail and went up the hill. Kate watched as he addressed the two alphas up there and went into the den with them. Kate was far too distant to hear what was said. Taking her chance and whispering a sweet nothing back to her stomach, she ran outside into the ran. With her muscles braced and focus at its peak, she traversed up an incline just outside the den’s entrance and then up towards the treeline that would lead her away from the pack’s territory. Despite the weight of her pregnancy, her muscles remained toned and in quick bursts, she could still move with great speed.
Once she did reach the treeline, she stopped and looked back towards the hill where her parent’s den once was, and then at the valley in the distance. It hit her now more than ever that she was about to do the unthinkable. To do what Tony had accused her of doing when she was captured by the humans back in spring. Right now, she was looking at her homeland, possibly for the last time. Kate breathed back the tears that were threatening to come pouring out when the realization hit her like a truck. Part of her wanted to give one last heartfelt how, but she’d be foolish to give her position away. In the moment, all she felt she could do was say farewell in her own way.
“I’m sorry mom and dad…I know you’ll understand…I’m not done here yet. I’ll come back someday. I promise.” With one more deep breath through her nose, she turned and disappeared into the treeline. Her journey back to Idaho had begun.
