Bell of a Boatman - is a sort of a... Sheriff Badge of sorts. If you see a noodle in the realm of the dead wearing a bell or several bells at once in one way or another - you can tell for sure that it is a boatman. And while in most cases it serves merely as an accessory and a beacon for the souls - in case of boatmans that are assigned to deal with feisty souls it is also a weapon. And very rare kind that is actually able to impact a soul at that!
While the technique of wielding the bell varies and is purely individual from noodle to noodle - a good bunch of them adapted a Meteor Hammer-like way of swinging it about. Unlike traditional way though, they use the entirety of their bodies, especially the tail, to aim and propel the bell where they need to.
In case of Laz - his bell is also a very "unfair" kind. The whole assembly weights waaaaaaay more than it looks like it should, and the tongue or hammer of the bell is several times heavier and more rigid than the outer shell. If something is to be smacked with such a bell sideways, like on the image you're looking at - it would result in a "Double-tap" effect. The initial impact of the shell is already heavy enough, but the impact of the hammer within it sends a devastating impulse and sends the shell flailing back and forth (Obviously it is also INSANELY loud, eeesh~)
The chain can be dispelled and resummoned in a moment's notice.
While said feisty souls are immortal - a good smack with a bell will usually stun it for a good while, allowing the boatman to properly chain it and drag to the boat for that final delivery
The world of Shalbahar is an upcoming setting, that hopefully will appear in my Galleries in not so distant of a future, so... stay tuned, I guess?

The bells play HUMONGOUS role in the entire setting, and several religions use them as main attributes there. Mainly for their intended purpose, of course - the sound they produce. But in some cases they have other uses, ranging from merely serving as fancy accessories or weird weaponry and all the way up to being key ingredient of several most powerful rituals
