Despite using a few poses from the Lion Guard cartoon, I'm actually very proud of this one. And it's to accompany a story I wrote for a friend a few months ago.
This is Pua, an elderly and rather sexy crocodile from The Lion Guard. In one episode, he almost eats Kion, and decides to let him leave with conditions, being so gentle. Unfortunately for Kion, I've written him into a timeline where he doesn't exactly fulfil those conditions. Although he does fill the crocodile nicely. A testament to how soft natured Pua is, I hope.

Your average sight first thing in the morning would not be even close to a pair of jackals sailing through the sky, backwards. And yet for the Pride Lands, and its fearless defender Kion, leader of the famed Lion Guard, it was just another Tuesday. No matter how often he used his innate power of the Roar Of The Elders to send them sailing, it seemed Goigoi could not even acknowledge his sudden defiance of gravity.
Not until he landed at least.
Kion had approached the crocodile grounds alone, on his father, Simba’s behalf. The aging leader of the crocodiles, Pua, was in need of a bodyguard. Thieving jackals had been consistently stealing food as he rested. Though Pua was a little uneasy about trusting the fresh Guard leader, not the least of which reasons being that he once considered eating the young prince, Simba had assured both that the matter was easily resolved.
A little too easily.
Shortcuts lead to damage, and haste makes waste. At his early stage as a Guard leader, Kion felt the Roar was the answer to everything. His bravado alone would have made him approach this task alone, even if it wasn’t by chance. The Roar not only upheaved the thieves, it laid waste to everything locally! Water from the local muddy lands scattered and soaked into spread grounds, a few trees knocked off balance and even the odd crocodile in Pua’s float found himself tipped upside down and stuck in the mud.
When the dust settled, Pua’s beloved grounds, and the root of their survival for the dry season, was a mere shell of its former self. Never mind the prey Kion was sent to protect. There would be no surviving on these grounds now. By the time Pua could even remotely begin to address the damage, it would be exhausting upon him.
Pua spoke with a soft yet rumbling tone. Age and wisdom echoed in his voice, but also a level of stern authority that came with experience.
“Son of Simba. This protocol of yours is... not acceptable. I trust you recall our previous encounter
when you were but a cub?”
The meek looking lion turned to face the aging reptile. Compared to Pua’s wrinkled and stretched body, covered in scars and Knicks, Kion still looked full of life. Though he worried about how much longer that may last. Roar or not, he faced a powerful predator, capable of snapping him in two even at such an old age.
He remembered well. When he and his best friend Bunga were but tiny little youngsters, they had
unwittingly trespassed on the crocodile float’s territory. Bunga’s headstrong nature had lead to the pair inadvertently challenging the crocodiles. By all rights, they should have been devoured there and then, but the timing and selflessness of their guardian, Zazu, had saved them that day. He had offered to be the meal for the crocodiles in Lion’s place, planting himself firmly on the tongue of Pua’s long term rival Makuu! Moved by the action, Pua had spared the lion prince, in respect of his father’s kindness to the crocodiles since his rule had begun. Kion had always been careful to tread lightly around Pua and even Makuu from that day on. It seemed today he had forgotten that lesson in the worst way.
“I’m so sorry, Pua. I couldn’t control the Roar... If there’s any way I can make it up to you?”
Pua’s eyes levelled out. He raised one in a manner that would have made the famous Mufasa jealous.
“The ways of the Crocodile demand that we protect our own. Formerly we had strongly considered eating you, for your trespassing on our land. As Guard leader, you have the authority to approach our land now. However, that does not excuse you from wanton destruction of our home, even if for a good cause. This watering hole was more than our way of life, young one.”
A look of doubt crossed Pua’s eyes. How could he put his next words delicately?
“Under our rules, which your father has long since honoured, I would indeed be obliged to eat you here and now. But because of your good intentions, I would be willing to give you a chance. I do not dare dishonour the son of the king otherwise.”
Behind Pua, crocodiles were beginning to free themselves from the damage and stickiness. A few of them grumbled in protest. Pua was a wonderful leader, but why not just eat the troublemaker right away? Any of them would have!
“If you can find us a suitable new home, before the end of the day, I would be willing to overlook your circumstances. But understand that I cannot back away from the way of life that has governed us crocodiles for generations. I will be forced to... uphold a punishment if you cannot find new grounds for my float in time.”
A smart lion like Kion knew exactly what Pua meant. If he could not find a new home to help the float survive, he would contribute to their survival in a very different manner.
The day was already late into its cycle. By the time Kion could ever hope to assemble the scattered Guard, it would leave him with precious few minutes to do anything about his predicament. Instead his only option was to scour the local lands as quickly as possible. It was a vain hope – surely if there was another land like this, someone would have taken it for themselves by now – but it was his only hope.
Time passed. Kion communicated with as many animals as he could, but who would be willing to share their supposed safe space with an entire float of crocodiles? Even one as revered as Pua was still feared out of consideration of his power and what he was capable of Potential empty spaces were quickly found to be populated, animals shunned both his request and reasoning. Kion couldn’t even bring himself to consult with his grandfather on the matter. Somewhere deep in his heart, he knew what awaited him, no matter how many he consulted with.
There was no more time left to pass. It was time. With a slow step, he returned to Pua’s float as promised, to share the outcome.
---
Animals from across the Pride Lands had gathered as though it were the very crowning of the King himself. At the base of Pride Rock, among the ceremony circle, stood the king himself, Simba, by the side of his son Kion. Directly by Simba’s left was Pua, who looked upon the audience with a solemn, whimsical look. What was about to happen today may have been traditional law as far as he was concerned, but the last thing he wanted was to make animals suffer on this sight.
The Guard stood at the back of the circle of stones. None of them dared to say a word anymore. The day before had been devoted to Simba and Kion spending their time together. Together they had
surrendered Kion’s powers back to the spirits of the past. They had called up Mufasa in their time of need for much needed peace of mind as to both of their futures. And they of course had given the Guard the news of what was to become of their leader. From there, it felt like an eternity of waiting for the very final outcome. The misfits of the solemn group of animals of course being Timon and Pumbaa, who simply could not stop bawling out tears. Given enough time, they probably could have filled an entire new watering hole of their own.
Simba and Kion had spent many words on each other. Kion’s fate was never to be king of course, but for those 24 hours, Simba had treated him exactly like one. Mischief abounded, until they lay beneath the open grasses to appreciate the stars together. Pua had been incredibly gentle in his mannerisms with Simba. And he was correct, Simba respected the ways of the crocodiles, no matter how tragic the outcome. There was no fighting their laws, not even for a king, but the expertise of handling the situation by Pua meant there no longer was a need to. Pua had assured the King that nothing about this ceremony would lead to waste.
The laws of the Crocodile would be sated, the float would go on, and Kion would contribute to the circle of life, while simultaneously atoning for the crime he committed. Even the fact it was unintentional did not impact the matter – Kion was a respectful lion who knew he had done wrong, and had to make it right. As a king would.
Pua stepped slowly upon a slanted rock face, and addressed the animals watching. He wore a small necklace of crowns of flowers, another trait of this ceremony from eons passed.
“Fellow creatures of Simba’s illustrious Pride Lands. I come before you not to become your enemy, but
to see that all is set right. I do not relish in what is about to occur today, but even as ruler of my own kind, I must adhere to the ways of the Crocodile.”
He turned to beckon Kion to his side. Simba and Kion exchanged one last headrub with each other. Kion could not stop looking back at his father, until he finally sat gimgwrely by the gigantic reptile’s side.
Sensing his doubt and sandness, Pua wrapped his tail around Kion’s back, in a manner to comfort andreassure, rather than intimidate and capture.
“Your king is wise, and his Guard understanding. Every animal in these lands abides by their own rules, as much as my float or Simba’s pride itself. Though he stands as king of us all, Simba respects long standing tradition and law. It is with a heavy heart, that this young lion has disrupted the way of life for those I protect. However... it equally warms my heart to know he is responsible and considerate enough to accept his punishment as such.”
There was a brief pause to give the animals present time to reflect. The silence was broken by something Pua truly did not intend to happen. His own stomach growling loudly.
“...Kion leaves us a legacy in one of the finest, most unique Lion Guards to exist, of which I have seen a number. He leaves a family who will honour his name in the care of these lands. And he leaves me and my float with the means to survive this harsh climate, and allow the crocodile to persist for many generations beyond today. He shall complete this ceremony, but he shall do so with true pride!”
The crowd murmured. Even Simba nodded in appreciation. Pua always had a way with words, in just a few short minutes he had settled the atmosphere and calmed the minds of dozens of creatures, himself and Kion included.
The sun began to set behind the few and slim clouds. Pua turned to face the prince, the son of the lion he respected so dearly.
“Now is the time, son of Simba. Ready yourself, but do not be afraid...”
With that, Pua’s dry, enlarged mouth opened to reveal a drooling, warm cavernous maw. His tongue lay flat and his eyes showed half closure. There was a casual little push from his tail against Kion, for he knew the longer this was dragged out, the harder it would be on the lion.
Unsteadily, Kion planted his front paws and face on Pua’s tongue. If it weren’t for him shuffling himself somewhat forwards to assist, the crocodile could have managed the rest himself. Impressed by Kion’s bravery, Pua decided not to prolong the matter any further than necessary. He walked his body along, low to the ground as the slanted surface would allow. Careful not to let his impressive incisors cause damage, he rolled his tongue flatly across the lion’s underbelly. Compared to other meals he was expected to swallow whole, a young lion was a simple matter. In just a few short seconds, his head was tilted up to the sky, as he allowed the rear end of the prince to drop into the back of his maw, gasping from the short drop.
The back of Pua’s throat sagged downward on his neck. It was an unusual looking pouch containing the entirety of his meal, except for the tail which he slurped between his snout smoothly. A part of him wished to hold things here. The cub was tender, delicious meat that very few crocodiles could claim to appreciate. Rich and soft, Pua’s instincts almost tempted him to swish his meal around with his tongue. Our of utmost respect, he did not. Instead he lifted his neck as far as he could.
**GULP**
A dark green bulge slopped down and across his body. As it neared his chest, it pressed against the rocks, squashing slightly and slowing in its decent. It took everything in the kindly crocodile’s power to stifle the “Mmmm” sound he desperately wanted to make. The feeling was... otherworldly.
Propping up his body as much as his withered limbs would allow it, Pua allowed the travelling throat bulge to reach its destination. The very centre of his body drooped downward, and bulged tremendously smoothly. As with the throat bulge, it found itself squashed against the ground, flattening in places, and dragging as Pua turned to face the animals again.
“The ceremony... Is complete. Kion has completed his role in the circle of life, but this is not the end for him. Whenever you see me amongst my float, you will see him too. When the spirits commune, he communes with them. And when you see our youngsters walk for the first time, know that his body allowed them to join the circle.”
All of the animals, Simba, Pua and the Guard included, bowed their heads in a moment of silence. Rafiki approached the wise crocodile’s swollen stomach. Tipping the predator onto his back, he equipped one of his ever famous painting gourds. Upon his belly, right where Kion’s head would be in his curled up, tight position, he drew the same mark as would be found in his tree. The message was clear. Here lies a royal lion.
Unable to move while on his back, Pua siezed the opportunity to comfort his charge. He folded his tail over the very back of the bulging stomach, resting it beneath for support. None of the animals could hear what he was saying clearly, but he spoke in a soft, growling tone that would calm even the most paranoid mind. He was easing the mind of his meal. Kion could barely move a muscle inside. The muscular, well toned stomach walls were more than used to swallowing prey whole, adapting their space to the size of the meal in question. Pua used his voice rumbling to make his stomach softly shake and quiver, in order to relax the body and mind of the cat that would soon become a part of his body forever.
And there Pua stayed until the sun disappeared and the stars emerged. The remaining animals dispersed. The Guard gave Simba their last condolences before setting about their own rest. Despite everything, the land still needed their protection. Come tomorrow they would be back to their duties, minus one important individual.
When Rafiki too left the ceremony stage, Pua beckoned the King to his side. Jabbing his tail towards his engorged belly, he invited Simba to rest his head upon his scaley middle. The cub inside had not begun to digest yet. Crocodiles had a blessing of two stomach chambers, one muscular for holding large prey down, and one with the strongest digestive fluids among reptiles. Pua did not plan to allow these liquids to work until the time was right.
“Good King Simba,” he murmured, as though still trying to comfort both parties at the same time. “Rest here until you become weary, for as long as you need. Kion is right here, a s he always will be. As much a part of me as you.”
**GLORP**
Simba could no longer hold the water back from his eyes. They squinted closed as the side of his head sank into the bulging green mass. For as tight and strong as the belly was, it was remarkably soft at the same time. Wrapping a paw across it, he gave his son the biggest hug the gut walls could allow. It was of course difficult to tell for certain from the outside, but Kion attempted to hug back as best as his squeezed body would allow.
A few hours slipped by, eerily quickly. Pua was the first to fal asleep, in total bliss at the feeling of a moving meal in his belly. Simba and Kion simultaneously followed suit. The crocodilian stomach chamber began its work. Capable of digesting bones and hooves alike, it would leave no taunting trace of what it contained. With one very important exception.
The stars were clear that night. They shone even brighter when a new star appeared as if out of nowhere, right in the centre of the sky itself.
---
Pua awakened to find Simba had fallen off of his body and was resting by his side. He found himself able to tip his elderly body onto its side again. As he did so, his dark green stomach jiggled and plomped to the ground. Despite how efficiently his belly had worked overnight, the lump left behind would be on his body for a very long time. Weeks, perhaps even months, for all to see and recognise.
Giving his stomach a light and gentle pat with a claw, Pua righted himself to his feet. He silently slinked away to make the sombre journey back to his formerly healthy home. As he walked, his stomach dragged the grass around him flattening it to leave a telltale trail. A handful of animals were awake at this early sunrise, but each and every one knew exactly what they could see.
The crocodile float had prepared what little body of water remained for Pua to rest in. His body floated in the middle of the semi deep pool, as his belly dangled down, yet as though defying gravity. If Kion were still conscious, he would have enjoyed the sound of the running water around the bulbous form. It most certainly relaxed the kingly crocodiles, whose eyes closed in slumber once more. The soupy remains in his belly would fuel his body to live an even longer life. Tomorrow it would fuel his energy to begin to repair the damage done. It would be hard work, but it can be argued without the nutrition of the once cub, it would not be possible at all. The water did nothing to disturb the strong stomach, nor did it affect the painting that addressed to all around of who had ultimately offered himself to it, for the good of all.
