There was a crushing grip around my entire body... Just enough to keep me in place, just enough to make it hard to breathe... Yet whatever held me didn't want me dead, not yet...
I found myself in the mouse's fist once again, and its fingers wrapped uncomfortably around me. As if noticing I had woken up, its grip firmed again as a sadistic smile crossed the monster's face...
Slowly it began to squeeze...
Not to crush me, that would be too easy... Too quick... I knew deep down this beast was enjoying this, the absolute power it had over me... I coughed on its hand, wincing while its grip continued to tighten...
My chest compressed, and soon it was impossible to inhale... My vision was going darker, though I still struggled, still fought in the vice grip, I wasn't going to die without any fight...
Noticing my struggle, its smile faded as its head twisted curiously... It was studying me... Twin red eyes were glaring at me, through me, doing their best to see how I tick... Squeezing this much made me wince, and a little more made me scream in pain...
I felt my knife come a bit loose as it squeezed harder. Its buck teeth were showing now as it grinned down at me...
With a last-ditch effort, I slipped my hand out from the beast's fist, brandishing my piddly knife...
Something told me that stabbing its hand; perhaps in another time, it would have released me... But as I jabbed the metal down and cut into the flesh just on its thumb, its smile darkened...
As my body screamed at me to stop, I forced my hand down. Jabbing my knife into the mouse's hand... But, nothing... Its grin went wider, wilder, showing complete joy, almost seeming to laugh at my attempts...
Like a child playing with a wild animal that had just bit them for injuring it, the beast squeezed harder...
Despite a now bleeding hand, it compressed in and in, but it did not crush me... It didn't want to yet... My vision grew dark, like an oppressive void congealed around my eyes...
I wanted to cry out in pain, to beg the beast to stop and kill me already... My chest convulsed as it tried to cough again, trying every way imaginable to get air into my lungs...
I jolted awake just as a sickening 'snap' echoed in my ears... Patting my body down, I found myself in a cold sweat and shaking even under the covers.
My breathing was hitched, jarred to the core while I lay there in utter disbelief. The mouse's fingers still felt like they were around me. Pinning me down to the bed, feeling me squirm against their crushing embrace.
The mouse's red eyes still bore into my mind. Staring me down with malicious intent as it gave a grin of pure delight. Even after stabbing it, it didn't release me... Despite being a dream, I felt so utterly helpless as I knew the mouse lay outside, probably sleeping peacefully...
The moment I tried to move, a jolt of pain ran up my leg and forced out a whimpered yell. Forcing my jaw to lock in place, I balled my fist and hit the bed. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I tried to bear through the shock of pain.
I let out a shuddered breath and wiped my eyes as the pain subsided. Looking to my nub of a leg, I had an alien sensation wash over me. The burning ache of phantom pain dug into me where my bandages touched...
Maybe it was some cruel 'prank' by the mouse... I'm just glad it didn't seem fit to burn the rest of me, yet... Maybe that's why it burned my leg? To make it impossible for me to run...
That can't be right. Right? After all, why would it help me afterward? From the ambulance door, the water, then even offering me that... Food?
None of this makes sense...
Snapping my eyes over to a clock across the room, I felt a tinge of pain when I read four A.M. I forced my breath to slow down and slowly shifted to let my one leg dangle over the bedside.
Checking the bandages on my nub, I grunted as they looked like they would hold still...
