When Haru decides to truly confess her feelings and stays with the Baron, how does he deal with the feelings of guilt for taking her away from her original home?
A wandering wish may be able to bring the best of both worlds to help!
A short story telling of an alternate ending to "The Cat Returns" with a good dose of reality shifting to give the characters as happy, fluffy ending!
It's not normally my style to choose fluff over transformation, but I thought this was too cute to pass up!

The Cat Returns: Two Worlds as One
"Baron, I think I have a crush on you,"
"I like your honesty, Haru. You'll find your way to the Cat Business Office... if you ever really need us again. Until then, goodbye!"
“Wait!”
The Baron couldn’t help but stop himself when Haru cried out for him, sensing there was something more to the urgency in her voice. Turning around, he was quite surprised when his feline lips met with her human lips, warm affection flowing from her. She pulled back, looking deep into his eyes as he did with her, seeing something genuine in her soul.
“Baron… I mean to say that I love you,”
All the bravado the Baron had prepared to make a flashy exit had completely vanished, being replaced with a fluster that he had never felt before. But looking back into her eyes finally confirmed what he was feeling, Haru also seeing it in his eyes as well. He held his hand back to her cheek as he did right before his attempted exit, only now his touch had a similar warm affection as Haru’s.
“Haru… I love you too,”
“I know I wanted to return back home, but after remembering all that we went through together and the thought of seeing you leave made me realize that spending the rest of my life with you… it would make me happy, even as a cat,”
The Baron offered his hand to Haru who unhesitatingly took it, softly clasping hers as best as he could with his smaller hands.
“Then I promise you, Haru, that I will do everything in my power to make you the happiest cat with me,”
Joyful tears dripped from her eyes at his promise as she pushed forward to hug his smaller form as best as she could with the Baron returning the embrace, discovering a part of himself he had forgotten long ago; a soft warmness that he left behind in favor of his chivalrously gentleman self.
“Let’s return home, Baron”
“Please, call me Humbert”
It was quite the surprise to everyone when Haru returned, her body shifting immediately back into her cat form the moment she stepped through the portal as her heart had wholly accepted her decision. The king found one last chance to propose to Haru, only for Muta to belly bounce him away, muttering his vow to retire for sure. Though Lune and Yuki were concerned with her decision, Haru assured that this was what she wanted and that it would make her happy. Seeing how true the love between her and Humbert was, the two were overjoyed for their relationship, Lune announcing that should they accept, they could hold a double wedding that night with a beautiful full moon present as their witness. The two gladly agreed.
It wasn’t long before the wedding was prepared for the four, with the moon shining brightly onto the courtyard the wedding took place in so that every cat could attend. Haru and Yuki walked down the aisle as brides and close friends, approaching their respective husbands. Lune and Yuki did their vows first, Haru and Humbert happily witnessing their unity in marriage before sharing vows themselves.
Humbert almost felt nothing but joy as the came closer to marriage, but he knew that deep down, Haru was saddened and a bit regretful for leaving her mother and her friend, Hiromi, back in the human world without so much of a goodbye. When he shared his vow, he also wished in his mind that there would be some way that he and Haru could be together without having to abandon one world for another. But both of their regrets washed away as their feline lips met in a sealing kiss, knowing that merely being together was what they truly wanted.
As soon as they kissed, time seemed to slow down before coming to a completely halt. As though it had heard the Baron’s wishes, the moon began to glow brightly before enveloping all of the cat kingdom and the human world together, the light going unnoticed by cats and humans alike…
Haru’s alarm rang loudly, causing the girl to quickly open her eyes, sitting up to look around the room. Yes, her room was messy as ever, but she also felt like she had just been through a big adventure, as though she had been travelling between two different worlds.
“Oh. I guess it must have been a dream!” Haru reasoned before she turned off her alarm with her paw.
“Haru? Are you awake?” her mother called, causing her furred ears to twitch at the sound.
“I just got up!” she responded, quickly throwing on her school uniform and hastily making her bed. She passed by her mirror, pausing for a moment to tie her hair up, but decided not to, choosing to quickly groom it down.
“Really, again?” he mother playfully scolded her as she sat herself down at the dining table, her reddish furred tail gracefully slipping in between the middle of the back while adding some salt to her tuna toast. “Just because you’re married to a baron doesn’t mean my kitten gets to skip out on school!”
“Morning to you too, mom!” Haru shot back just as playfully before frantically packing her lunch into her school bag. “I’m off!”
“At least take some breakfast with you this time!” her mom said, holding a tuna toast out to her with one paw while taking a bite of toast she held in her other paw, obviously emoting how delicious it was.
Haru puffed her cheeks in annoyance before taking toast into her muzzle before slipping on her shoes running out the house, her mother giggling at her morning antics.
As she quickly dropped down to her paws and shoes to increase her speed, she was quite surprised to see Hiromi also running in the same direction, her light brown tail and ears pulled back with similar fervor.
“Hiromi?!”
Said cat girl looked up, her nose and whiskers twitching beneath her natural blush at the savory smell coming from Haru’s toast before she refocused on her best friend as they now ran side by side.
“Good morning Baroness!” she greeted playfully.
Haru quickly munched down on her breakfast before addressing her friend any further. “I told you to just call me by my regular name, Hiromi! It’s kind of weird for a friend to say that. And why are you running late?”
“Ah… I may have walked into a nice sun spot and had myself a little cat nap…” her friend responded, clearly a bit embarrassed by the situation as shown by her wagging tail.
Haru rolled her eyes with a smile as they continued their feline dash to school.
The Baron’s wish had indeed come true, though in the most unexpected of ways. When the light of the moon faded, where there were two worlds now existed one: a world where cats and humans live in unity as one people. The five lakes that formed the entrance to the cat kingdom in a form of a paw now became the world’s oceans, with the kingdom resting in the middle of the largest lake. Feline and human cities merged together to form towns that mixed both cultures seamlessly, creating a feline utopia of peace and harmony under the benevolent rule of King Lune and Queen Yuki.
While the cats did not change much as they only increased in size just below the average human height, humans were drastically changed. It seemed the wish used Haru as a template for these changes as humans now had paws that could still function as normal hands, cat ears and tails that with slightly lighter fur than their hair, short snouts with feline noses, and whiskers, though they did lacked the full coat of fur like Haru during her time in the cat kingdom. Despite these differences with the other cats, however, the former humans were cats all the same in everyone’s eyes.
The cat girls’ path soon cut through the shopping district, which caused Haru to quickly stop before she passed a particular store. It was an old fashioned storefront with green details and a sign that hung just below the second floor balcony which read, “The Cat Bureau & Antiques” At the front, Muta was sitting on his chair, reading the day’s newspaper as usual. Haru simply giggled when he only mumbled something in response to her greeting.
Looking up to the balcony, she smiled happily when she saw her husband, the now real cat Baron Humbert von Gikkingen, standing atop it with a tea cup in one hand and their pet crow, Toto in the other. Humbert looked down and returned her smile with his own warm one, tilting his hat to her.
“Haru! We’re gonna be late for school!” Hiromi yelled to her friend. Haru smiled awkwardly at her husband who gave an understanding grin, gesturing her to catch up with her friend. With one last wave of her paw, Haru got back down on fours to dash off to school with Hiromi.
“You picked a good cat to marry, Baron!” Toto said before pecking at his tea.
“No, I believe we choose each other, my friend.” Humbert replied as he watched his wife leave before looking off to the sky. He felt as though something had changed about the world. But he shrugged the feeling off, as he wished for nothing else in this world as long as he could be with Haru.
