I've been dying to show you all this location for a long time! The Dunes of Gold are made up of shimmering, ultra-light sand that blew in from the South Oplayn beaches, where for thousands of years, populations of tiny molluscs lives. Those molluscs protected themselves by adding layers of gold nacre to their shells.
When they died, their shells were broken up into small pieces by the waves until they became sand. That sand was lighter than 'normal' sand, which is mostly made of quartz, which allowed it to be carried on the wind inland. Most of it fetched up in the dunes.
Being lighter than quartz-based sand, the nacre-based sand always sifts to the surface, giving the Dunes of Gold its characteristic shimmering surface.
Despite this being a desert, a few plants survive here. The spiral hilsuny, barrel-shaped kura, and spiky apicocoma all grow here.

Possible ret-cons: The only change I'd make would be that monolith in the background. It's incredibly faint but it's there.
