This commission was done way back in 2008 for Miu, 3 Apples Media, and the outfit he’s a part of, Club Stripes. The characters are Peaches and Cream, in the dinette setting which serves as a backdrop to their story. Originally this illustration was to be included in the back of a book slated for publication, along with pieces from other artists, but fate dealt a blow to the project and it was cancelled. *Edit - the project was not cancelled, only delayed, so it's still headed for completion! 8 D*
Even so, it was a fun illustration to make, and I‘m flattered that they thought of me when selecting artists. It was especially a challenge working with such well established characters, rendered by a high-profile talented creator. They’re already so well stylized, it’s an intimidating act to follow. I think that’s why I was especially careful to try and go for an interesting camera angle, and some colorful lighting. I’m sure that’s what stands out the most in this drawing.
That, and the newspaper-reading patron to the side. The headlines on his paper were supposed to be all about ongoing murders and such, and he’s an old guy with a bag, so clearly it’s him. I don’t know why, but as I drew I kept imagining that he was a traveling trucker / serial killer. Apparently, some part of me thinks it’s a great idea to polish off a cute, appealing, soft illustration with a nice dash of murderous psychopathy. But I’m not crazy. You should let me bake for you sometime - nothing fills out a delicious, puffy cake like a delightful dash of railroad spike.
