“…….”
“……….”
“…. sooooo… alls well that ends well?”
“Excuse me? Did I miss something? When the heck did this mess end exactly?”
“Sorry, the silence was killing me.”
Petie just rolled his eyes at his sister’s comments and finished putting his books in his locker. Shutting it with a clatter he turned to look up at Rose who looked down at him with a sheepish smile. He just frowned in response. “No, seriously… when did this train wreck stop. Last I heard we’ll be dealing with it for at least a month more.” He’d been aiming for sarcasm but it must have come off more bitter than intended as he saw Rose flinch a little as he quickly mumbled out a “Sorry…”
“It’s okay… just… you’re kinda lowballing it there I think…” Rose said, adding on a weak chuckle as the two normal types started walking down the hall… well, Petie was walking and Rose was taking one step for ever four of his. “Yeah… gonna be a while before I live this down…” the kangaskhan said, trailing off and letting the akward silence that’d bothered her start back up.
Petie just sighed “Well… yeah, but what about the other idiots? Neoma told you anything about her team lately? She didn’t mention anything to me.” he asked, hoping to fill the void. He still wasn’t used to Rose being this… awkward? Unsteady? He wasn’t sure what to call it but compared to her usual bright, energetic, confident self seeing her like this was almost creepy. “… well… yes and no…” and Rose’s answer did nothing to help the teddiursa shake those vibes as he just stopped to glare up at his sister. Refusing to dignify that with a proper response as he folded his arms and frowned. Rose just rubbed her arm awkwardly and swished her tail, fortunately she was facing Petie so there was no risk of it knocking him over, as she looked away.
“She didn’t tell me exactly what happened but she did mention they had a meeting-“
*********************
“… I am hereby official disbanding Team Gero… as soon as I finish getting the paperwork filled out.”
There was a moment of silence from his teammates all sat around the lunchroom table as Keith finished his declaration and solemnly prepared himself for the fallout. Natural Bea was the first to speak“… well, guess this means I can skip worrying about when this’ll happen at least.” and her comment was both reassuring and deflated the poliwrath some as he sat back down with a thud. With a deep sigh she continued “Yeah… we… kinda saw it coming-” the seismitoard started to say-
“I did not. Why are you disbanding the team?”
Bea stopped short and flinched, Keith wincing as well, as Neoma piped up looking at them in genuine confusion and concern. Placing his hands flat on the table Keith couldn’t bring himself to look Neoma in the eyes as he started talking “… I’m not good at breaking bad news or subtlety-“ the fact Bea didn’t interrupt with a snarky comment at that perfect opening was a depressing surprise “so I will just out and say it. The last match and the… stupidity leading up to it proved I am not fit to be a team leader… and I need to focus more work on being fit to just be around others it seems.” the poliwrath expression turned sour “The school thinks it would be good for me to… get some counseling for my interpersonal issues-“ the tone he said it made it clear he was quoting them on that one “and despite myself I’m inclined to agree. So I am disbanding Team Gero.”
For a moment there was silence at the table aside from Eugene’s constant nervous croaking. Until Bea broke the silence “Don’t be too hard on yourself cus, I get some of the blame too.” the seismitoad sighed. She rolled her eyes as Keith shot her a confused look “Oh please, did you forget I’m the one who suggested you make a team in the first place? I thought…” she let out another sigh before continuing “I thought it’d help you with your social skills… you know… instead of just trying to tell you you needed to work on them and not be such a hard ass. Which I could’a done… even if it’d taken lots and lots and lots and lots-“ Keith momentarily cut his cousin off by coughing into his fist and glaring at her as Bea chuckled nervously and got on with her point “lots of repeating. But yeah, if you wanna blame anybody for this Neoma, I’m as good as any so…”
“Oh, I am not blaming anyone. I just wanted to know why. It will be sad to no longer be part of the team but I understand.”
The greninja just smiled as Bea and Keith stared back at her, dumbfounded by how well she was taking this since she was kinda the victim here. “Oh! Can we still train together?” Neoma suddenly added as the two large frogs just nodded making her smile brightly “Wonderful~ Also… how do you feel about this Eugene? Are you all right?” she suddenly turned, along with the cousins attention, to the croagunk who just sank in his chair and croaked for a moment before nervously shrugging.
“… actually Eugene-“ Keith spoke up, pausing to try and sound less… confrontational as he saw Eugene shrink more in his chair “… er… t-the teachers… mentioned you when they were lecturing me on my shortcomings… they didn’t say anything more but…” the poliwrath sighed and ran a hand down his face “I know this is rich coming from me at this point after everything and disbanding the team and… look, if you can share it… are you alright? Whatever was wrong the teachers seemed more upset with you than they were with me and that can’t be right…”
The croagunk puffed up his cheeks and let out a looooong croak as his eyes darted everywhere trying to find some place his former teammates weren’t before settling on the table in front of him “… c-can be… r-right I mean…”
*********************
“MUCH more, lets start with your sophomore moves-“
Eugene’s managed to pale at that comment as he realized what the teacher was getting at. If she noticed though she didn’t acknowledge it, she was too busy trying to burn holes through him with her eyes. “When a student enrolls in this school they’re required to show they know at bare minimum the basics of their freshmen moveset down pat. There are exceptions and odd cases but this is usually the rule. They are ALSO required to provide a list of the moves they want to have worked on learning by their sophomore year within the first month of enrollment normally. This is so we can help them start learning those moves before they advance.”
The teacher’s tone was measured and in any other case this would seem like a lecture on basic PCA procedure… but Eugene knew where it was going. “Now while you did provide us a list of 4 moves you wanted to learn in the proper time frame… you also followed it up by requesting to rethink most of the list. You said you were sure on your choices. This is fairly normal for a freshmen and, like any other freshmen, we gave you an extra month to think more on your moves…” the teacher took a long breath “… five. months. ago.” she emphasized each word as sharply as possible.
Eugene just croaked, his pitch noticeably higher in fear.
The teacher started shuffling through the papers on her desk, revealing various forms Eugene had signed off on “You slipped through the cracks I will admit… but you aren’t the first student whose tried this Mr. Weller.” she held up each form in turn, as she continued speaking “The excuses given when any teacher asked, the back tracking when they followed up on it, joining a team to hide the fact you hadn’t worked on any new moves-”
“U-uh-“
“Yes. I know you’ve kept Fake Out on the list… but you haven’t been training it or working on any other three moves now have you?”
Eugene just curled up in his chair.
“As I’ve said you’re not the first to do this and other have gotten away with it longer… but this combined with your performance in the last match does not reflect favorably on you Mr. Weller, so we’ve decided to handle this situation NOW.” setting the papers down the teacher kept her look fixed on Eugene “I don’t know why you’ve been delaying this and it could be anything from laziness to not wanting to make a choice-“
“T-that’s i-it-“
“BUT it’s not my job to find out the why, that falls onto someone else. We are fairly certain there will be some open time in your schedule where team practice use to be so here is what’s going to happen-“
*********************
“I-I’m g-gonna be attending tutoring sessions to… f-finalize m-my sophomore moves f-for the next week… o-or two… or three…” Eugene mumbled as he trailed off, well aware his former teammates were staring at him. “… you didn’t have your next years moveset worked out?” Keith asked, sounding more dumbfounded than angry. “… I… I h-had Fake Out…” was the best rebuttal Eugine could managed as the croagunk slumped forward in shame.
“… I never even noticed…” Keith sighed out “… I truly failed as a team captain.” Eugene flinched at the comment as if he’d been backhanded. Neoma gently patting his back to comfort Eugene did nothing to unslump the croagunk. Bea just looked between the guys and winced for a moment before sighing “Well this is a mess… but!” she suddenly lightly smack the table and forced a smile “Nothing to do but go forward, right? … right?” seeing the best reaction she was getting to her forced positivity was a very confused look from Neoma the seismitoad just slumped back in her seat and pouted “Right… this’ll take some work…”
The table was quiet for a moment before Neoma, the only member of the group NOT visibly bummed out, noticed the mood and frowned a little “… I did kind of like being on a team…” she sighed out, hanging her head a little as the other three winced… and the guys looked to Bea for help. The toad panicked for a moment, looking between them and Bea, before slapping the forced smile back on her face “H-hey, cheer up Neoma… it… it’s not a total loss…?”
“It’s not?”
“Noooooo no no… uh… oh! Y-you got that freshmen sister, right? You can form a team with her!” Bea said cheerfully with a clap of her hand to try and hide the cheerful tone was said in a rather panicked and quick way “A ninja team! … or something… right?” There was a long moment as Bea held the forced smile while Neoma looked upwards thoughtfully. Finally the greninja smiled “You know… I think I like that idea. I’ll talk to Sakura about it.” as the whole table exhaled in relief and immediately tensed up as Neoma continued “Oh! There is one thing…”
“… yeah?” Keith said, looking a little nervous about what might be left unresolved. “Are we still going to be having our regular training session?” Neoma’s question made Keith go from tense and nervous… to embarrassed as he looked down at the table and mumbled something. Not waiting for them to ask to translate Bea cut in “He said we can’t cause that’s when he has… it’s either detention or counseling, I couldn’t make out what the last word was.”
“… counseling… we’ll reschedule.”
*********************
“-but whatever happened I’m sure they’ll be fine~” Rose finished with an awkward chuckle, trying her hardest to avoid Petie’s skeptical look.
“… riiiiight… which brings us to you.” Petie said as Rose’s awkward chuckling got a little more panicked as she craned her neck to avoid the teddiursa’s gaze. “You still haven’t told me what the teacher told you during that meeting-” Petie said, frowning a little at Rose staring at the ceiling “Hey!” his annoyed yell, as well as jumping onto her tail suddenly, promptly brought Rose’s gaze back to the ground as she let out a squeak of surprise. “Come on already! I’m your little brother and your teammate!” he yelled indignantly, currently straddling his sisters tail “You can’t just tell me you have counseling and detention and leave it at that!” Petie wanted to try and sound authoritarian… and was painfully aware he was sounding more like a panicked, scared little kid.
At the least it seemed to make Rose feel guilty as her ears drooped, her gaze darted to the side, and she mumbled something about “… also told you they wouldn’t let me go to Ms. Vastella for counseling…” which just made the little bears frustration rise. “Rose! I know that’s not all they said to you! You wouldn’t be acting like this if they didn’t tell you something else… yes even with your screw-up with this whole match!” he added quickly as Rose shut her mouth quickly and awkwardly rubbed her arm “So… come on. Just tell me… something about it! You’re the one who started this whole team idea an-“
“I know Nanny & Teddy-chan was my idea Petie. I know.”
The frustration and anger was immediately replaced with nausea as Petie found himself scooped off Rose’s tail and held up eye to eye with her at a dizzying speed. Nausea and guilty panic at the look in Rose’s eyes and the tone in her voice. He’d seen her angry before, he’d seen her confused and unsure before… this however was new. She sounded utterly lost and incredibly guilty. He bit his lip and tried not to let a childish whimper escape as he dangled from her hands. Not daring to break eye contact with his sister.
Finally Rose sighed and Petie found himself being hugged tight to her. Not in her usual “Playfully squish him like a teddy bear” way either. One arm was wrapping around his back and the other was cupping his bottom as Rose hugged him close and just rocked back and forth… though he wasn’t sure if it was for his comfort or hers. “I… I don’t wanna talk a lot about what they said right now, okay?” Rose mumbled, Petie hearing her clearly due to how close he was “Right now all I can say is… they…” the teddiursa could hear Rose chewing on her lip for a moment as she tried to figure out her next words before finally continuing.
“They had some choice things to say about my future, alright?”
*********************
“Oh, before you leave Ms. Julafton… there’s one more thing we need to discuss.”
“Yes sir?”
“I regret to inform you that while other teachers would try to handle this topic more gently to avoid playing the villain… I myself have no issues playing the villain. We need to discuss your future in battling.”
“… my future in battling sir? Excuse m-!“ Rose stopped herself short before she said something she might regret. Detention and counseling was enough trouble on her plate without adding extra helping. Biting back the urge to get indignant and offended she managed to grind out a semi-neutral sounding “W-what do you mean sir?” as she looked at the instructor. Her choked down anger keeping her from withering under his unimpressed glare.
“Yes. Your future. I am aware you came into this school as a Junior and might have managed to avoid being told this so I will explain it for you. If you want to have any hope of getting into any of the major battling leagues in any capacity beyond low-card matches or being booked purely on your looks-“ Rose was unable to keep from sitting up and looking offended at that as the teacher went on “then you need to establish a good record leading up to your senior year. Senior year is when the big leagues starts scouting for the next big thing to come out of this fine school… and they usually don’t bother to look at folks who don’t have an impressive record leading up to it.”
“… with all… due respect sir… I think my record will be fine with one loss on i-“
“That is not what I’m talking about. You were told going into the double-matches that they get less attention that solo or team matches, right?” the teacher didn’t bother to wait for Rose to nod “Out of double teams only the truly skilled and novel usually get invited to the big leagues… your little fan-club aside can you honestly look me in the eyes and tell me Nanny & Teddy-Chan is doing anything worth being noticed by the leagues right now?”
Rose jawed in the air for a moment like a magikarp trying to come up with an answer. She felt like there had to be one but the more she thought on it the more it came back to an petulant sounding response. “I formed the team for Petie-“ which she immediately realized she shouldn’t have vocalized as she was sharply cut off “And how exactly did this match help your younger brother in any way, shape, or form?”The teacher asked as Rose felt like she’d been slapped. The kangaskhan shut her mouth and grit her teeth silently.
“That’s what I thought. I’m not going to insult your intelligence by claiming you won’t be able to graduate if you keep going like this… but can you graduate with any kind of future in battling? I want you to ask yourself that. Or do you think you have connections in the leagues that’ll do you favors? I recall you mentioning family who works-“
“I’m not calling in favors to make that happen.” Rose managed through her clinched teeth “I’m going to do it on my own.”
“That remains to be seen Ms. Julafton, and I want you to consider that. Consider it very carefully. Oh, and one final thing I want you to think on, just to be sure it doesn’t slip your mind.”
“What!? Er… w-what sir?”
“You said you made this team for your brother. Even if this is helping him in any way, and I doubt it is, does it do anything to help you? Think very carefully if anyone is actually benefitting from this little… sibling duo you’ve formed. That’s all. Dismissed.”
“… I… it… erg…”
“Dis. Missed.”
“Yes… sir…”
*********************
“Choice things to say about my future as a battler and about our team.” Rose ground out before taking a calming breath and sighing “… things I wanna think more on before I talk about them… alright?” Petie sat in silence, still cuddled in Rose’s arms and being rocked, for a moment before timidly squeaking out “O-okay… j-just… l-lemme know when you’re ready…” He wasn’t actually happy with this but he wasn’t gonna press it… not with Rose sounding like this. He’d NEVER heard her sound like this. He still didn’t think it was fair though, her keeping secrets about-
“What about you?”
“Huh?”
“You haven’t told me what the teachers talked to you about yet.” Rose said, pulling Petie away from her so he was laying back in her arms and looking up to her “And I know one of ‘em pulled you away to talk with you about something. Jules tattled to me about it.” she added as Petie opened his mouth to try and play dumb about it. Snapping his mouth shut and curling up infant style the teddiursa stuttered and blushed, eyes darting everywhere but his sister’s face “Did you get the same mean granbull guy I got lecturing you?” Rose asked suddenly asked making Petie shake his head as he fumbled his words “U-uh… uh… uh…” As he tried to figure out what to say suddenly the first thing that came to mind tumbled out of his mouth.
“I don’t wanna talk about it?”
“… really?”
“… i-it…” Petie sighed, rubbing his face with his paws as he groaned in frustration “The whole meeting… it… it just wasn’t fair…” he managed to say before letting out a squeak as Rose reposition him in her arms “What’s not fair? You’re not in trouble are you?” she asked, voice now filled with concern as she had Petie sitting in the crook of her arm with the other bracing him upright so he couldn’t look away from her face easily. He mentally lamented how unequal this was, since he literally had to jump on her tail earlier to make her look at him, before sighing and shaking his head.
“No, no, I’m not in trouble… it’s just… the whole thing wasn’t right…”
*********************
“What do you MEAN I got an A?”
“I mean you got an A. Sure it’s not an A+ but it’s kinda self explanatory kiddo-“
“But I lost! That doesn’t make sense!”
The teacher’s good natured laughter did nothing to ease the confusion and mixed feelings in the teddiursa. The ear to ear grin on the passimian’s face didn’t help either. “I love getting to be the one to tell freshmen about this~ Ready for a shocker kiddo?” he didn’t wait for Petie to answer as he spread his arms as if revealing a great revelation to the bear “Your grade is not as connected to whether you win or lose as you think~” Petie meanwhile was just shaking his head in disbelief.
“I know Rose got a D for this match, she told me herself! And I heard it fr-from-“ he stopped short, not wanting to out Trudy as having blabbed what she thought the others grades might be “s-some folks that the frogs got grades just as bad! What makes ME the exception!?” he squeaked, trying not to yell and barely able to restrain himself down to a kindergartner pitched whine. Why did HE get special treatment? He’d lost the fight! He’d lost the fight bad! He was a part of this whole stupid thing, unwilling or not, so why-
“Whoah there kiddo, easy. Deep breaths there. Iiiiin and oooout, calm down. It’s simple.” the teacher’s attempts to illustrate calming breaths did nothing to make Petie wanna actually try it. “Whether you win or lose goes on your record but as for grades… well, as I like to say it’s how you play the game~ Get it? I coach little league in my off time an-“ the chuckling grown-up saw this wasn’t having the desired effect on Petie and coughed “A-anyway as I was saying when grading a fight, especially for freshmen, HOW you fight matters. Whether you keep making mistakes, mess-up your moves, that sort of stuff. That’s what we take into account for your actual grade.”
“Then why don’t I have an D or F or whatever Eugene got?”
“Okay, first off we don’t talk about other students grades here. Shoulda mentioned that earlier I guess. Second off you reeeeeally need some more positive reinforcement in your life kiddo. You did just fine out there. Especially given how much size and reach Eugene had on you. REALLY especially if you think about the sheer number misplays he guy made an-“ stopping short the teacher chucked and looked embarrassed “Rule one, fumbled for a minute there. Anyway you did fine out there so you got a fine grade. Simple, right champ bear?”
Petie was too busy silently feeling like scum to answer the instructor. A good grade should have been cause to celebrate and maybe see if he could use it to guilt an extra serving of dessert tonight… but this just made him feel ill. Like he was somehow getting special treatment. He’d done everything he could, tried his hardest, FAILED… and somehow passed anyway. Came out smelling baby fresh while the others got in trouble. While his teammate and SISTER got in trouble. It was her fault yeah but-
“Got a lot on your mind huh kiddo?” the passimian interrupted his thoughts with an unwanted head pat “Don’t sweat it, alright? You’re a freshmen, you got time.” Petie just frowned and tried to swat the offending hand away on reflex. “Speaking of… you ever consider solo battling?” the teacher asked with a bright smile… as Petie just stared at him blankly. “I’m on two teams. The one with Rose and P-“ the teddiursa started to say only to be cut off by the fighting type waving his hand and butting in “I know, I know, but still… like I said, you’re a freshmen. You got time to try lots of stuff and see what works for you.” the guy grinned brightly again, nodding as if agreeing with himself “To try and find out if you wanna be on a team or not.”
Either not noticing or not acknowledging Petie’s blank stare the passimian continues “It’d be great to see more of what you can do you know, you really surprised some of the folks judging~ Speaking of-“ the guy looked thoughtful as he rubbed his chin in contemplation “When was the last time you got to fight in a match with your main team anyway? Was it back with that circus thing…? That was at least a month ago I think-“
“I’m-helping-my-teams!” Petie nearly spat out with more force than intended. Well aware he had to look like he was on the cusp of a panic attack with his expression and posture and too riled up to care at the moment. “Whoah! WHOAH! Easy kiddo! Just talking aloud! Calm down! Easy!” Petie inwardly groaned in embarrassment as the guy immediately knelt down to his level and put his massive hands on the bears small shoulders in an attempt to make him calm down or something. Petie partially tuned him out as the guy was giving him the “Take deep breaths” spiel he’d heard before. He was too busy wrestling with his own thoughts to listen to that again.
At least until he found a lollypop slipped into his paw. That overrode everything else with a near instinct response. “There we go, glad I keep a few of those on hand.” the teacher said as Petie nursed on his treat, a relieved look on the passimian’s face “Helps motivate some of the younger players-“ he stopped himself short as he noticed Petie was now frowning around the lolly “Aaaaanyway! That’s just something you might consider in the future is all, okay? What matters right now though is even if your team got the L you tried your hardest and you earned that grade, got it champ bear?” The return of the unwanted head pat did nothing to help Petie’s frown as the teacher stood back up “Now… get on back to class or your free period or whatever and enjoy the lollypop~”
*********************
“… you gonna tell me how it “wasn’t right” or you gonna keep being preverbal?”
“… s-sorry, m-mind wandered… it… um… it was…” Petie frowned and resisted the urge to suck on his paw for comfort as he tried to figure out how much to share and how to phrase it… before just groaning and rubbing his face with his paws “I passed, okay? For whatever reason everybody else failed and I got a passing grade and it feels wrong and like I got special treatment and and-” stopping himself short the teddiursa took a calming breath to keep from blabbing any more “a-and we talked ‘bout some other stuff but it wasn’t important…”
“… wait… so your upset that you… passed?”
“T-that’s not the point!”
“Then what is the point? Or does it have to do with the other stuff that wasn’t important?”
Petie tried not to wince and dignify that with a response, even as he reeeeeally wished Rose hadn’t noticed that part, and fumbled for a counter that’d make her change the subject. “W-well yeah? W-what about the stuff YOU don’t wanna talk about!?” he blurted out while pointing an accusing finger at her… and promptly covered his face in shame since that was incredibly immature even for him. Rose, fortunately, just chuckled and took it in stride as she bounced him in her arms “Fair enough… we’ll deal with it later then alright? Got enough on our plates right now… like getting you changed~”
“… wwwwwwwhy do our conversations always come back to that?”
“Do you really want me to try and answer that question?”
“… no, no I do not.”
The two shared a brief chuckle as Rose started walking off to find a private spot for the changing. Petie meanwhile tried his best to enjoy the thin veneer of normalcy of the moment… and just not think about all the bad stuff storming in his mind. He could worry about whether he deserved this grade or about his place on his teams later. The last thing he wanted to do right now was think about the futur-
“Hey Petie? You think about what’s up ahead?”
“… in what way Rose.”
“Like the Nanny & Teddy-Chan Fan Club meeting in three days.”
“Ooooooooh.” Petie let himself relax as he let out a sigh of relief. That kind of what’s ahead… “Actually? Yeah, yeah I have.” he said, puffing his small chest up with pride and not bothering to hide the slight smug tone in his voice “I’m gonna stand up, tell everybody there this whole mess was your call and not mine, sit back down, and let YOU clean up the mess! … and don’t you dare make a reference to… you know!” he quickly added seeing the grin forming on Rose’s face. “You sure I can’t make a reference to that~? Gotten good at cleaning up messes thanks to you~” was Rose’s counter as Petie pouted and stuck his tongue out at her.
“Teasing aside there’s something about the meeting…” Rose stopped short and looked contemplative for a minute. Then she chuckled and shook her head “You know what~?”” her sudden tonal change had Petie sitting up in her arms fully alert like he was expecting a bomb to go off “I think that can wait for now~ I’ll tell you later~ We’ve both had enough… just enough in general one day~” Rose finished brightly and in a sing-song tone as she pushed open the door to an out of the way bathroom.
“… tell me what later?” Petie was squirming to try and get a better position to glare at his sister even as she shouldered him and started digging around his his backpack for the changing supplies “Rose, Rose! Tell me WHAT later!?” he squeaked as his sister just chuckled.
“That’s for later~ Now stop squirming so I can get the changing mat out~”
“Roooooose!”
“Or the paci~ I DID find it first~”
“… you know what? I think I need it after today, gimmie.”
The End.

Double Act 3
Epilogue – As it all Falls Down
“…….”
“……….”
“…. sooooo… alls well that ends well?”

The End.
