★ Side-Project ★
The Athmook family contains about 600 species, most of which look largely similar to one another*. They prefer to live underground although they come to the surface regularly to feed, drink, and socialise. Several species have paired up with the kasulam, another six-limbed species that develops colourful skin, which it uses for display.
*On a meta-level, this was an accident. They're my equivalent of the Order Insectivora, which is the mammal wastebasket taxon. In other words, of naturalists discover a small, nondescript, mousey thing and find no reason to place it in any other taxonomic Order, they assign it to Insectivora. As a result, there are heaps and heaps of very similar animals in Insectivora, so I thought, why not make that so for the athmook?
Then I did an intelligence analysis of my aliens and found that my most intelligent species was from this Order, so on Kaleida, one of the dominant species is 'shrews'!

What is Kaleida?
Kaleida is a worldbuilding project without a storyline or individual characters. Most of my clients come to me with stories and characters and treat worldbuilding as an after-thought, so I'm doing the opposite and focusing solely on my worldbuilding. This species is a result of my research on how to create an alien ecosystem, which I wrote as a blog series. Read it here.
