Zally means well, her metaphorical dial just doesn't go below 11.
And Partiarch Figgins knows that Vizlet isn't being serious. Being the oldest and arguably wisest of the enclave, he's the only one that Vizlet can talk to about things like this and unload her Tired Wine Aunt energy in front of.

Biteleaf (as used by Galen, a medic in the Dinnish compound) is definitely smoked, as seen on p. 12 of the prologue. Seems to have similar perception to the weed in the general opinion as relaxing and/or dumbing.
We've also seen the bruisegrass - seen it in extra section "Bruisegrass farming for fun and profit", discussed in p. 106, semi-canonically smoked in "Learn to Live". And mentions of spingrass and Altrac powder in p.60. None of which has the same prominency as tobacco (IRL) and alcohol (both IRL and in OoPs). So while there is a plenty of mind-altering substances mentioned they all are probably perceived as more "serious" things than tobacco.

How do you remember those pagenumbers?

I don't but I do remember general place in the story (Galen is smoking when they return to the compound in the beginning, bruisegrass is discussed well after the stabbing and surgery, a "box of fun" is in Kassen's report after he is gorged on clams while having an existential crisis) so I can find each one in less than 10 pages checked. I do not remember "Learn to Live" that well but it is tagged there.
I should have probably placed links in my first post to spare others time.

There's always Katisha...
I high school, I knew of one young woman who was exactly so the younger sister of a classmate and a total trainwreck. Pleasant enough to behold, I suppose, and a soaring intellect, but she had Asperger's (before anyone knew what it was) and was as nervous as a scalded cat.
I met her again a few years ago, in her mid 50s. Let's say she matured very well. Calmer, wealthy by her own work and still easy on the eyes. Just a late bloomer.

Well no it seems like their society is split into sorta political officials that lead the community that are known as Matriarchs and Patriarchs, both being gendered heads and rulers of a social group (at least going by the dictionary)
I don't think those have to do with religion as those aren't solely religious terms. It seems like Vizlet has chosen Lippie for a reason and I am just curious about that

Patriarchs generally start out as males who are particularly skilled at something, and also have a decent handle on interacting with, leading, and teaching others in their specialty. Most of it is determined by overall popularity throughout the enclave's population, but the Matriarch and other Patriarchs ultimately are the ones who make the decision.
(It could be better but generally works pretty well)

I feel bad for Vizlet; not gonna lie. This has to be probably one of the toughest decisions for a matriarch to make: deciding who will be your successor to carry on what you have taught and more to others as well as lead them through smart decision making ensuring a bright future for not only the enclave but the species.
Since knowledge and learning is important to Vizlet for the advancement of her kind, I wonder how much it troubles her that whoever she picks might not follow through with her endeavors? Personally, I would struggle with putting my faith in someone else to continue all that I've set out to accomplish, especially since they're their own person and have their own aspirations and do not want to feel forced to follow my footsteps exactly.

Lippielin brought to you by VizVir Pharmaceuticals a Vi&Vi company
Vi&Vi finding new ways to harness the yinglet workforce for the good of all industries.
corporate jargon translated: Vi&Vi finding new ways to exploit highly medicated yinglets for the profit of all subsidiary companies while skirting human pay rates and undercutting the competition.

Vi&Vi Industries loves you too! Without one angry bird comic artist we would never be able to properly profit off cheap disposable labor!
for some reason i could totally see vizlet and viracoix going into business running a standard corporate conglomeration with nice-on-the-surface-catchphrases while completely exploiting yinglets and other street urchins for profits. I think viz would see it as a good thing for other yinglets being able to do regular work and be more human while not sniffing at the profits and vir would see it as mostly profits with a bonus of helping some lesser species.
something told me you would like it! and i could totally see lippie building exosuits and mixing chemicals in a lab coat. ... swooning into the arms of lab assistants every once in a while.

It's fun that Vizlet's private one-on-one interactions with the patriarchs so far seem to give off a little of what humans would probably call an 'old couple' vibe, but a different flavor with each one. Comfortable old complaints with Figgins, some your-loyal-servant spy romance with Beizel. She's very annoyed with Narklet, but he seems to be conflicted a bit on his feelings about her. That makes me wonder about the others, but now I think of it, are any of the others her sons? Chakki has her eyes, and seems youngest after Narklet.
