“Rose… this plan is stupid.”
“Petie, you’ve said that… three, four, that one was twice… seven times now.”
“And? That changes it how?”
“… fair ‘nuff. Look, I know it’s stupid but… please? Let your big sis be stupid just this once?”
“Oh, like all the other times I had a say in you doing something stupid…”
Petie bitterly griped as he adjusted his eviolite bib and glared at Rose. The kangaskhan trying to make sure the bells, one being a Shell Bell, in her hair were nice and tight so they wouldn’t come out. The match was minutes away, they were just about in their costumes, and Petie was frustrated as heck. He should have been a little distracted by the fact (he couldn’t decide if it was depressing or not) that this martial arts outfit was the most dignified Teddy-Chan outfit he’d had in a while… but he wasn’t. Rose’s selfish and stupid, stupid, stupid battle plan was all that was on his mind.
“Let me fight Keith and please just stay out of it, you can fight Eugene. Alright? Please?”
Petie was used to Rose being a little selfish. He was used to Rose enjoying fighting more than he did. He completely understood that this was some kind of pride or honor thing or whatever and Keith hadn’t so much as trod on a sensitive part of his big sister’s past as he’d taken a sledge hammer to it. This didn’t change the fact that he’d thought it over and he couldn’t get over Rose, after dragging him into a Doubles Team and this match in particular, was asking him to fight it like it was a solo match intentionally…
Which was the reason he’d made up his mind to completely ignore her battle plan and if she didn’t like it? Well tough toenails cause he honestly didn’t care. All he had to do was get past Eugene and then he’d teach Rose and Keith exactly how much trouble a toddler can cause… n-not that he was one! It was just an expres-
“You okay there? You looked like somebody slipped you some sour candy there.”
“I-I’m fine, just thinking…”
“Alright, well… guess it’s showtime. Lets see how this goes, wish me luck against Keith okay lil bro~?”
“Right… luck… lets just get this over with.”
******************
“Croooooo… Keith?”
“Yeah?”
“This w-whole thing is kinda stupid… h-honor and pride or whatever aside it’s… just dumb…”
“Honor and pride are the c-cornerstones of… of…” the poliwrath tried to work himself up into a proper frenzy at that comment… but sighed and deflated under Eugene’s utterly unimpressed look “Okay. Yes. It’s dumb… but things aren’t always smart, or logical, or whatever… doesn’t make them any. Less. Important.” he said, raising and clenching his fist for emphasis. “… i-important for you and Rose? W-what about me and Petie?” aaaaand Eugene’s comment deflated his enthusiasm right back down. “… fair point… look, I’ve been told how unfair this is… I’ll… okay I dunno if I can make it up to you. Just humor me on this, alright? Afterward if you’re still upset you can do whatever you feel is appropriate. Just stick with the plan for now. Please.”
Eugene croaked in response, mulling over those words. “Whatever you feel is appropriate” sounded a lot like “Quit the team” to his ears even though he was pretty sure that wasn’t what Keith meant… and he wasn’t sure how he should feel about the fact he could honestly consider it. he’d originally joined Team Gero cause he didn’t have a clue where to go next with his battling and he thought being on a team would help (and cause he saw Neoma was joining and she was hot… he’d long accepted he was weak willed)… but that wasn’t really panning out. And now, here he was about to fight a battle he didn’t want where Keith had basically asked him to beat up the baby brother of another girl on so the poliwrath could have some kind of death-or-honor match against her ALL without getting any of HIS input on it in anyway…
He should put his foot down and back out of this whole mess right now… but…
“Croooo… r-right… follow the plan…”
Eugene slumped a little as Keith gave him a grateful pat on the shoulder and said something that was supposed to be confidence building… but it was drowned out by Eugene reminding himself just HOW weak willed he actually was. Taking a deep breath to shake off the depression and misery he reluctantly followed behind Keith, covered up by the much larger frog’s shadow… not that he wasn’t used to that by now.
He just hoped this was over quickly and Rose didn’t hate him when it was all said and done.

“Well… I figured they’d get a crowd… but isn’t this a bit… much?”
Joe looked around the PCA arena of the day with a raised eyebrows. Students and guests were invited to watch matches and people tended to show up just because they had nothing better to do… so the stands were never [i[empty[/i]… but… “This is closer to what I’d expect from a big senior’s match, even with Rose and Petie’s fan club.” Mam said, glancing down to the group in the front row. The two massive seniors had intentionally picked spots in the back out of courtesy to the other students due to how many seats they took up and it gave them a good view of just how full the arena was. “I suppose it’s nothing really, but still odd…” the scolipede mused as she trailed off to listen to two students in the row in front of them talking.
“Think it’s gonna be a brawl?”
“Heck yeah! They got sent to the nurse’s office for illegal fighting TWICE! This is gonna be a grudge match!”
“Shhh! Here they come!”
“… that’d explain it.” Joe whispered, the conkeldurr struggling to be overheard as the crowd had an immediate reaction to the combatants entering the arena “Apparently word got ‘round about the two ending up back in the nurse’s office and people just asum-“ he was cut off by Mam groaning into her hands as she’d already pieced it together “yeah, that. Well look at it this way Mam, you at least set up a fight that got everybody’s attention.” the fighting type joked… as the bug just groaned harder.
“… I will be so happy when this little domino chain I set off finally stops…” Mam groaned around her hands before sighing “With any luck the siblings came to some kind of agreement and this match won’t be…” she stopped short and her antenna swished“Joe, if I take my head out of my hands will I see Rose & Keith really annoying the ref with something?” her best friend patted her shoulder gently and said reassuringly “Maybe you should quit while you’re ahead and we should just watch this play out?” as Mam just groaned louder than before.
******************
“You two are serious about this. I mean, actually serious.”
“Yep!” “Yes.”
“And they just… went along with it?”
“… yeah?” ”… they agreed?”
Petie’s utterly flat expression and Eugene doing everything to avoid her eyes did not impress the referee as the alakazam frowned, her mustache twitching, and glanced back at Keith and Rose. After a long moment of silence, the high school juniors trying not to whither under her utterly judgmental gaze, the psychic type just sighed and rubbed the side of her head with one hand “Fine. Sure. Whatever. It’s your grades that’s on the lines. Play this however you want… just play it by the rules.” the last comment was punctuated with a glare that managed to make the larger mon shrink back a little. It was obvious the ref was aware of the hallway incident and the potential for a grudge match.
“As for you two…” the ref turned a less annoyed look towards the freshmen “…like I said, your grade. Do what you want I guess. Not my problem if you wanna fail like your teammates.” the lighthearted sarcasm in the comment made Eugene shrink a little… but Petie’s expression remained as flat as before getting a brief raised eyebrow from the ref. Watching him for a moment she just shrugged, moved to her spot, and motioned for everybody else to take their positions. The crowd started to quiet down as she cleared her throat and her voice was projected through the arena’s speakers.
“Team Gero vs Nanny & Teddy-Chan, fighters ready?”
The four students shifted into combat postures. Rose & Keith’s eyes locked on the other’s gaze as Eugene nervously eyed Petie and the teddiursa kept his eyes on Rose.
“BEGIN!
******************
It all happened too fast. Petie actually had to try and go back over it all in slow motion to realize exactly what had gone down.
The moment the ref had shouted begin everyone moved all at once. Rose and Keith had kept their locked gaze and run further from the center of the arena, keeping pace with each other like something out of an anime, before skidding to a stop as their brawl started. Petie had tried to give chase, his short legs having been rapidly outpaced, only for Eugene to suddenly jump in front of him, right up into his personal space. On sheer reflex Petie had jumped back… AWAY from the actual brawl he wanted to get involved in…
Which left him standing there, glaring at the croagunk in his path. “Croooooo…” Petie watched Eugene’s cheeks inflate as the down looking frog seemed to lower his stance and start swaying side to side, his long arms dangling down and swaying like pendulums to the motion. Petie tried to bore a hole in the guy with his glare as he growled out “Get out of my way.” through bared fangs. “Sorry… no can do… crooooo…” was the only response as the poison frog continued to just sway.
“Fine then…” glancing past Eugene Petie could see Rose and Keith hammering away on each other… he could reach them. Even with his stubby legs they weren’t that far away. Dropping down into a sprinting position Petie ran the sequence of events in his head. he didn’t need to FIGHT Eugene… just get past him. So he’d dash up, probably take a hit of some kind but clobber Eugene’s knee with a Feint Attack, and keep going. Even if the frog WAS faster than him that should be enough to let him close the gap and get into the thick of it. That was all he cared about right now. Clenching his fist and prepping his move Petie crouched low and took off-
And skidded face first into the dirt, world spinning and cheek aching from… whatever the hell had happened. He’d charged Eugene and there was a blur and… whatever hit him hit him. Rubbing his aching cheek he tried not to be surprised that he could actually recognize the feeling. He’d felt it before in the “Spars” with Rose… if you could call then that. He’d been hit with a Sucker Punch. Staggering back up, and taking a moment to figure out where he actually was, Petie faced Eugene again… noting the croagunk rubbing one of his wrists.
Right… in between the pain and being sent skidding Petie had felt like his Feint Attack sorta connected with something. Now he just needed to figure out how the hell Eugene actually DID that… as the frog was doing that stupid swaying thing again. Glaring at him Petie found his eyes wandering to the fight going on juuuust past the guy… as he grit his teeth. He just needed to get past Eugene. That’s all. There’s no way it could be that hard. Lowering his head he braced for another dash. He’d just bring his arms up to guard the moment he got near frog. This had to wo-
Petie once again found himself tasting dirt and his cheeks now matched… they BOTH hurt. Groaning Petie got up much slower this time. He at least knew that wasn’t a Sucker Punch this time… but aside from “Probably Fighting” he didn’t have a clue what it actually was. Staggering to his feet Petie regained his bearing and shook his head to clear it (as much as his cheeks made the action huuuurt). Glaring at Eugene again and forcing himself to NOT try and focus on the fight going on just beyond him Petie tried to focus.
His original plan had been to basically get underfoot as much as possible to try and keep Keith from fighting efficiently. To try and compensate for the fact Rose was at a disadvantage so she didn’t get hurt too badly, lose, or get hurt too badly and lose. The fact it’d be a wonderful rude-gesture-Momma-would-spank-him-if-he-did to Rose’s stupid plan and Keith’s whole “pride, honor, and ego” schtick was just a big fat bonus as far as the teddiursa was concerned. It was obvious now that’d have to wait till he figured out… however Eugene was doing whatever it was he was doing to him.
Replaying the events in his head Petie went over the few things he knew for sure. Eugene was somehow hitting him whenever he moved towards the croagunk, it was with his fists, and was too darn quick to see or try to block. The confusing thing, beyond that last point… Petie reeeeeally wanted to know how the heck Eugene was doing that, how the frog kept hitting him out of absolutely nowhere. You had to get close to hit somebody as far as he’d been told…
Waaaaait a minute… Rose had been going on about something for this fight when they’d been talking strategy before. She’d definitely mention something about it… when Petie had been stewing on how to interrupt her fight with Keith instead of listening. Something he regretted now as he tried to pick out any helpful words among the memory fog of him tuning her out. There WAS something there… what was it… he kept coming back to a word… r something… re… rea… oh! Reach, she’d mentioned something about reach! … which didn’t see, that important now that he was recalling it. Heck, Taiho had even told him something about reach… it was… uh… something, something, longer reach controls the fight… something, something about arms usually being the reac-
Petie’s train of thought slammed on the breaks and squealed to a horrified halt as he looked at Eugene again, this time focusing on his arms. The croagunk’s arms were back to swaying, loose and limp like before, but Petie could clearly note that they were longer than normal. “He’s got a lot of reach on you, you’ll have to be careful if you try and get near him to attack” Rose’s words, or at least what he assumed she’d been saying came through clear as a bell now as Petie did some quick mental estimations. How long Eugene’s arms were, the longer-than-Petie’s legs the croagunk had, and the fact he already knew Eugene was quicker than he was…
It all added up to Rose and Keith being a lot, lot farther away than they looked and that getting to them was gonna by a lot harder than he’d thought…
*********************
As the two of them crashed against each other Keith had to admit, while he still strongly disapproved of her usual style… there was no questioning Rose’s ability in the ring. Just as he wanted they’d discarded any pretenses and the blows rained fast and free down on each other as fast as they could move their fists. While he admitted Rose’s flurry attacks, he wasn’t sure whether to call a combination of Comet Punch and Thunder Punch cheating or not, admittedly hurt… his own Power-Up Punches and Rock Smashes were finding there mark. After all he’d been trained for endurance… to be able to take a beating. They were fighting his way…
A thought that felt surprisingly sour even as the adrenaline pumping through him tried to drown it out.
All the same standing and punching each other was thrilling… but his body was already aching a little from the electricity she was literally pounding into him. He need to get control of the fight. He needed to change it up… as next time he pulled his fist back, instead of another punch, he threw himself at her. Driving his shoulder into her gut with a Body Slam and knocking Rose onto her backside. Looming over her as she seemed to curl up to protect herself Keith leveled his fist. Aiming a Drain Punch square at her face he stepped forward… and his eyes bulged in pain as he took a point blank Aerial Ace, via Rose’s foot, to the gut throwing him backwards and onto his ass.
Winded he sat up… and barely brought his arm up in time to keep Rose’s electrified foot from colliding with his head. Muscling through it despite wincing in pain Keith threw the foot to the side. Creating a burst of water behind him, his variation of the Waterfall move, the poliwrath launched himself back to his feet and into Rose’s face… and the punching match was back on. Fighting moves and electrified fists both flying as the two were pummeling each other again same as before… though this time Keith was little more careful to keep from falling too far back into kicking range. If Rose could perform Thunder Punch with her leg, and the amount of force in that kick, Keith wasn’t eager to find out if she could do a kick variation of the Thunder Comet Punch whatever it was combo…
So he was going to stick with his tried, true, and trained method of pummeling the opponent into submission for now.
*********************
Eugene wasn’t happy with how things were going at all…
The croagunk had realized his longer than normal arms were one of his best strengths when he was young, around the same time he’d gotten interested in battling. He’d trained hard to increase their flexibility, control, and speed to the point he was supremely confident in a move one of his past coaches called the Flicker Jab. So long as his opponents were in range he could hit from almost any angle faster than most people could see… and if put his legs and body into the sway and reach he could make that range stretch even further…
And now he was using this finely honed special move… to beat up a pre-schooler. It wasn’t a good feeling at all.
Sure he KNEW Petie was the same age as him… but between his height and looks Eugene couldn’t shake the feeling he was bullying a little kid. Especially since he understood exactly why the teddiursa kept trying to get past him. He’d have to be deaf to not hear the brawl going on behind him (as much as he tried to tune it out so he wouldn’t imagine what was happening). Petie wanted to go help his sister… and here he was standing in his way. Physically blocking him from reaching her. Yeah, try as he might there was no way Eugene could look at this that DIDN’T make him an asshole. He was the asshole here… and why? Because he was following a plan he didn’t even agree with or like. Why was he even doing thi-
“No. Croaaa.”
“GAH!!”
He loosed another Flicker Jab, another Power-up Punch, and grazed Petie’s cheek sending the normal type staggering back again. He had to give the teddiursa credit… he’d figured out the general area of Eugene’s reach pretty quickly and was pulling back just as he got into it trying to avoid his blows. It was clever… but the strikes were just too quick. He didn’t need a full on hit to stagger the bear after all.The SNAP at the end of the strike was enough to stun him. It seemed the bear had finally figured that part out too as he’d fallen back to rub his swollen cheeks.
Eugene wasn’t even hitting him full force either… and was painfully aware how disrespectful that was. And the fact it was probably drawing this whole thing out. Maybe he should just… attack. Knock the little bear out with one decisive blow and just end this whole thing. He internally winced at the idea… not only of hitting a little kid full force but the potential of hurting the kid. The fact Eugene KNEW he was the bad guy here didn’t make it any more appealing. Wouldn’t wrapping it up be more merciful though? Petie wouldn’t have to watch Rose getting beaten… hell, that’s why he wasn’t looking behind him to see. He just didn’t know… every option seemed bad to hi-
“I said no.”
“UGH!”
Another Flicker Jab, another staggered bear. Petie had managed to almost evade that one… but he’d guessed it was aimed at the wrong cheek so he’d ended up on his butt. The bear was learning… but Eugene could already tell the teddiursa wasn’t going to get anywhere like this. He didn’t know if Petie had caught onto it yet or not but the Flicker Jab’s greatest strength wasn’t the speed but it’s flexibility. He could swing and hook it from almost any angle… the only reason Petie was getting anywhere with dodging was because Eugene was aiming for the same spots again and again to try and get the point across. To try and make the bear give up and back down…
Back down from trying to help his sister… and the croagunk was back to feeling like an ass again… maybe he should just knock Petie out… but could he… what to do, was this just gonna drag out? The bear wasn’t giving up…
“Croooooo….”
********************
Wincing a little as another flurry of electrified punches hit home even as his own fist planted itself in Rose’s gut Keith made a decision. “No reason to drag this out any further.” Rose had played it by his rules, he’d seen all he needed to, and it was time to start wrapping this match up. The kangaskhan was strong and knew what she was doing, he’d managed to confirm that, but he never had any doubts about how this fight would end. That he could end it whenever he wanted. That’s what his signature combo was for, the two moves his father had prepped him to learn all the way back when he was a poliwag.
Planting his feet and pulling his fist back Keith cleared his mind and just stood there. Not moving even as Rose hammered home another volley of blows on his sculpted body. He glared hard at her… PAST her… to what she’d be doing, how she would act, what her next move would be. As Mind Reader showed it to him… and he furrowed his brow a little. Rose lifting her arms defensively and standing there to take the blow. That was the vision in his minds eye and, taking into account everything else, didn’t make any sense… but he wasn’t about to let that stop him.
Clenching his fist tighter he could feel the energy building up in it as it started to glow. No, he couldn’t let him stop him. Once he set it up he had to follow through. The energy had to go somewhere… that’s what had been drilled into his head all those times. It’s why his father had taught him this moves original name, the exploding punch. Too powerful to aim properly… but he didn’t need to aim now. Swinging his glowing fist forward he saw his vision play out as Rose stood there and brought her arms up defensively… as Keith brought his might Dynamic Punch crashing forward!!
GONG!!
Into a clear barrier that manifested in front of Rose’s crossed arms to stop the punch cold. The glow and energy fizzling out like it’d struck a steel wall. He mentally registered the move as Protect… as he also realized Rose had countered his trump card perfectly. “What, you didn’t think I knew? The set-up is a dead giveaway!” Rose said, almost sounding smug with herself, as she kicked Keith in the gut with another Aerial Ace making him grunt in pain and stagger back “Guess you didn’t know I had Protect, huh~?” she added, definitely sounding smug that time as Keith rubbed at his abs and glared at her.
He was conflicted. Part of him was honestly impressed she’d countered his strongest combination so trivially. Another part of him wishes he’d used a Throat Chop on her earlier after that smug, smarmy remark. A larger part was a little thrilled that he couldn’t just end the fight as simply as he’d assumed… and that part won out as he clenched his fists and brought them back up. He wasn’t going to dignify her taunt’s with a response… but he didn’t need to as she was back on him again and the fists resumed flying.
If one decisive blow wasn’t gonna do it… they’d just have to see who was the last fighter standing when the punches stopped!
*********************
Groaning and holding his aching, swollen cheeks Petie paused to take stock of the situation. He’d been trying everything he could to get by Eugene or stop whatever the hell he was doing to hit him to no luck… so what had he’d learned? Trying to dodge whatever the strikes were wasn’t happening. Trying to BLOCK whatever the strikes were wasn’t happening. And trying to go the long away around him wasn’t possible since Eugene was just plain faster than he was… so what was left?
Pausing to look at the swaying croagunk and PAST him to where Rose & Keith were again punching each other like something out of one of the shonen anime he watched the teddiursa took a deeeeeeep breath and, after clutching at his eviolite bib for a moment, nodded.
Alright, he had a plan.
