You know, I think that any sane person designing such a machine would have it ask for confirmation if it finds people outside the original search area. Like, one of these people must be the operator. It shouldn't find a caregiver struggling to hold a reluctant baby in place and decide to diaper them both.
On the other hand, things like this do seem to be more often developed by mad scientist types, who might be less careful.

It's also been cited as "If there's two ways to do a job, and one of those ways will result in disaster, then he will do it that way." or words to that effect. With regard to someone plugging a bunch of sensors in upside down, requiring them to redo an expensive rocket sled experiment. There's some disagreement between people who were there at the time whether Murphy was talking about a general tendency of people to do the wrong thing, or insulting the technician who'd got it wrong in that case.
I seem to recall "If anything it can go wrong, it will" being referred to as Finagle's Law; guess the confusion of names is a sign that those laws continue to operate.

Define malfunction. As the system seems to be over achieving here. It was smart enough to not detect a life form then it figured that they would be a life form nearby. Which means it's creator wasn't smart enough to provide something to trick it's creation for the test run. Though I would have to give the machine some props as it's showing that it can detect and work with a subject not on the changing table but by it which makes it far more user friendly in the end.
I expect that everyone else who wanders into the lab will be subjected to the same treatment . . . at least until Cleo shows up, and the machine WILL recognize that Cleo is NOT a baby in need to diapereing, and it WILL be respectful of Cleo, and she will turn it off. Everyone else won't be too happy with Saffy, but life's little unexpected annoyances, right?
