These titanic monsters come here just to slaughter us? What's so special about Earth anyways? We are tiny compared to them, what makes this place so special? Slaves? No, that wouldn't make much sense. Maybe they want Earth itself? I guess that might make sense, but then why not just bombard the whole planet from orbit? Why let their lizard soldiers just tear into people if they want the planet though? Do they just see this as fun, are we little more than a small snack for them to enjoy?
The more and more I ask myself these questions the more questions I end up making. Then again, it all comes back around to this mouse. I've been following it for a good few blocks now. Ducking behind cars whenever its ears twitch. And here I thought the giant lizards were weird, but this mouse seems even scared of them. I can't seem to get a good shot on it, too twitchy too nervous.
I lost track of the minutes while I tracked the giant. Trailing it through the destroyed streets. These used to be homes, these used to be people's lives. Now I understand why I never liked superhero movies... Wanton destruction is never truly recognized until it's staring you right in the face. Thousands of innocent people had been evacuated, but hundreds of thousands where trapped by these things. These monsters, killers, even if it's a mouse I have no doubt It would have done the same horrors the lizards do.
Finally, it seemed like I had my chance. With the lizards further away my heart only sunk as I heard the sounds of distant gunfire fading. Guess they finished off whoever was shooting at them. God, it made me shiver to think about what they would be doing to anybody who surrendered. Though I'm not really the religious type I sent off a small prayer, a faint hope if you will. Only a few days in the war and I'll tell you. It's one thing to see somebody utterly incinerated by one of their plasma weapons. Another thing to watch as a lizard picks up one of your best friends. And you stand there helpless as it rips him limb from limb, only to. . . Well, let's just say it was snack time. After dropping my bags beside a barely recognizable apartment I struck out to duck behind a car. If these missiles can puncture the armor of those lizards, I wonder what it would do to this thing.
. . . Steady. . . Take a breath, aim down the sights, and wait for the mouse to pause. With it peeking down the street from behind a building I took my shot. This launcher is one of the lighter kinds thankfully, but still packed a punch. The things ears twitched and it snapped back, obviously terrified of the near-deafening sound. . . Twitched. . . It moved just as I was firing. You know, if I was aiming for the building I would consider this a full win. But to my utter dismay the mouse's red eyes snapped down to me. Don't get me wrong, the lizards yellow ones are nothing to gawk at. But this was all the more unsettling, yet it seemed surprised. I mean, obviously something would be if it was suddenly fired on. Yet for a flicker of a moment, I wondered if it even knew what was going on.
With my ears ringing from the shot, I practically all but dropped my weapon and booked it. The ground shook when that mouse dropped down. I guess it lost its balance and with a quick glance over my shoulder I saw it scrambling to get back up. But I didn't really care. All I knew to do was to run, but where the hell would be safe? I laugh at it now, but at the time all that was going through my head was, "Shit, shit, shit, shit, and shit!"
