Obviously, the skin colors and pattern on Spike's body heavily resemble that of a tiger, but in truth, Spike is actually very calm and as a matter of fact, a very relaxed dino for being an Indominus. He lives in a dinosaur amusement park, but one that was trying to cash in on Jurassic World's success and concept. While the park he resides in was not well known, once Jurassic World was shut down, his park popularity, solely due to him being the same species as the animal which took down JW, absolutely exploded off the charts.
While he never tried to escape from the park as he grew used to it, inside his cave area where he'd sleep or get away from guest eyes, laid a hidden portal. Sometimes he would step through this portal, which took him to an undocumented and untouched island. It was so relaxing to him, and he liked to spend his time alone or in the jungle, enjoying the peacefulness and purity of it, away from the prying eyes of the park guests.
Whenever a human gets near his cave area, typically to either give him food or clean the entrance, he puts on a slight act, getting defensive like an animal would be, and when the staff try to "calm" him down, he just lays in front of the entrance to subtly block them from entering it and finding the secret portal.
Spike can talk, but nobody within the park knows that as he has no reason to speak or anyone to speak to.
This all changed, however, on a day when a young boy, around only 9 years old, washed on the shore of the island. He was walking along the beach, enjoying the tropical warmth, when he saw the boy unconscious on the sand. He knew something was different, and he realized they were a child.
He had a strict code when it came to human children, but this was the first one he'd ever seen end up on his island, or even been close to besides the park's staff. His code was to never hurt them and keep them under his care. Without him, they would surely die on the island. He picked up the child and took them to his cave and provided them with food and water when they woke up, while also ensuring they didn't go through the portal.
Once they did awaken, they were scared, but he nuzzled them and assured them that he wouldn't hurt them. They slowly believed him as they realized he'd given them food and water and hadn't eaten them. He kept the boy by his side for months, while also keeping his presence a secret.
Spike still would go through the portal constantly, between the park and the hidden island, and eventually he was able to safely get the boy to the park staff without them being concerned as to how the boy ended up in Spike's enclosure, and in only a few days the boy was safely returned to his home.
