Whoof I sure was half asleep when I spat out this description off the top of my dome. o.x;
Meet Mishaa Yunblohd, small(ish)-town gal, comic book enthusiast (particularly rare feminist centered Golden aged titles, but also more current feminist indie comics) and museum curator (smallish towns have museums too!).
Her family settled roughly two generations back (three, depending who you ask - this has been an ongoing argument for decades now), and none have ever left. Being a smallish town, inevitably everyone knows everyone else, and the dating pool is fairly limited - for Mishaa at least. She has had no luck or interest in the peers she grew up with, or if she did, they moved away for better job opportunities. And despite the small-town stereotype, she and her cousins have no interest in each other thank you very much! Most people coming into town are there for vacation, temporary work, or literally passing through for the day - most new residents arrive hitched or are golden aged themselves; but she prefers her comics to be from that era, not a potential lover.
She's always felt a little different from the rest of her family - she takes after her father; she's a visual reminder of romantic summer fling - he had been a Siberian backpacker and her mother had been a young, enthusiastic tour guide. They had charmed each other immediately and it wasn't long before they were bumping pretties, and although they had made a good effort to be careful...
Mishaa's mother and the backpacker had stayed in casual contact (thanks internet!) and while he was aware she had become a mother he's never quite put two and two together (and if he's had assumptions he's never voiced them).
Mishaa has met him twice in her life, when she was about 5 and he was looking to visit Mishaa's mother (a friend and fond memory) and again when she was 8, when he was bringing his fiance to meet the wonderful town and people he'd met all those years ago. Mishaa's mother finally married a childhood friend in Mishaa's late teens - she has no strong feelings on the matter aside from the fact she had slightly less bookshelf space after he moved in. She endeavored to move out as soon as she could so she didn't have to keep her collections in storage.
The Town Museum is run by her Aunt, who has worked tirelessly to put it on the map and make it as modern and interactive as possible - it certainly does bring in some tourists; especially the ones who don't feel like trekking out to historic landmarks in and outside of town. Mishaa fancied her Aunt a Lara Croft of sorts and would often spend her afternoons after school doing her homework among the yet to be revealed or retired exhibits in the back - her summers were spent volunteering there and finally, she earned the qualifications to be hired as full time staff (she could have coasted by on nepotism but the visitors and exhibits deserved someone with an important/expensive piece of paper).
The frustration of online dating (most of the locals on the app were relatives or old classmates she had no interest in!) and having to go to the next town over for fresh meat finally came to an end when a fresh-faced rookie cop transferred to the local office... he was the talk of the town - not too tall, not too short, thick muscular arms but with features that had him often called a pretty-boy; he wasn't fond of the term but generally politely ignored these compliments. They encountered each other often at the local cafe (owned by a cousin twice removed), and, with effort and a little luck, she had managed to captivate his attention - this was a feat as EVERYONE wanted to get to know him.
It wasn't until months later she learned why he felt the most relaxed with her - she was open minded about specific topics. The rainbow pin on her blazer, the LGBT or Transgender authors and artists she raved favorably about without ever being sensationalist or fetishizing them - these were important issues to him. Personal, even.
While the town wasn't necessarily... close-minded, those who weren't just bigots, a lot of their idea of acceptance was still a little old-fashioned - well-meaning, but still not quite there. He'd taken a gamble moving to a small(ish) town. Mishaa hadn't pried into what he meant, his personal life was his own business, and she valued his privacy within their blossoming friendship.
Even at the town's 5th annual Pride Gathering he attended (off duty), but simply lounged among the disproportionate number of allies in attendance. Mishaa had flown her pansexual colours and a pair of lesbian tourists had to be covered up because they had mixed up which state allowed toplessness.
Afterwards, Mishaa had to ask the rookie; "So what's your type?"
She had been expecting to hear "Rugged, ripped and wants to be called daddy." or perhaps, "A twink who wants to call me daddy."
What she was told was, "Oh, I like independent, forward thinking women, I have a soft spot for blue eyes but... um... really someone warm and just gets me, you know? A connection, understanding, that's always been the most important to me. Any potential obstacles are easier to surmount when you're on the same page and wavelength."
"Oh... I see! Well! I guess this town's Straight Cis-Allies Club has another member then," Mishaa had laughed.
"Not... quite," the rookie had said, after an awkward silence.
A few months later, Mishaa asked the rookie if he would go on a date with her.
He said yes.
He said yes every time. He even asked her out a few times.
They're taking it slow but the whole town is already asking when the wedding will be, or barring that, how many kids do they plan to have? (The ones who aren't jealous she snagged the pretty new guy in town, anyway)
And they'd both just smile, remind folks that they're in no rush, and deftly change the subject. After all, they hadn't even moved in together yet... (though they do have the keys to each others' place).
Mishaa doesn't believe a woman needs a man to feel fulfilled, but she does admittedly feel... less alone, with him around.
And yes on a warm day she might just decide to read while wearing... quite less than usual.
I may adjust her markings a little more in the future to reflect her mixed feline heritage a bit more (it's very subtle in her facial markings right now - I'm thinking tiger), or I may just leave it that the spots were just strong in this one, and the cheek stripes don't mean a thing.
This character was gifted to me by SethTriggs and has had her origin/background modified slightly from her initial creation, since I don't work within that setting nor do I own any of the other characters that appeared in that initial character creation, so it would make no sense for them to show up. Also changed her original surname because as much as I enjoyed the 90s I was never much a fan of that title (I'm not sure if it was an intentional reference to that comic or not, but given how she's a comic fan, maybe? I never got an answer when I brought it up with the originiator initially - either way, that's the nature of adopts; they get adapted by those who adopt them, sometimes in some unexpected ways!).
