*Sigh* I don't have the computer skills to scan and adjust my larger scale paintings so they look as good as they do in real life. Ah well I tried, going to stick to smaller painting from now on though. Glad to have it finished with.
The story behind the painting: The witch and the dragon are long time friends, both grandmothers and matriarchs of the forest. They share magical secrets, beauty tips, and treasure stolen from unwary adventurers. The grandmother dragon slides along the forest floor like a skink, but when she wants to take flight, she finds a clearing then fills her body with helium, and like a zeppelin rises into the air. The witch has a command over the forest corvids and a singular black cat, who alert her to trespassers, she alerts the dragoness who then promptly eats the trespassers and brings back the spoils.
Or you can come up with your own story. :)

The multi-scan seems to have worked out well. You did a good job of hiding the joints. I want to scan a few old LP covers, but my scanner only does 14 x 9, so I have to make multiple scans and stitch them together. There's software to do it in the scanner's programs, but I haven't had a lot of luck with it. Better software is a Google away ('join multiple picture scans') but I haven't tried one. Most have a free trial period. For example, https://www.photostitcher.com/
I love your story! Looks like Grandmother Dragon brought some family with her to visit. Most people don't know that dragons create helium as a byproduct of the fire-breathing process, and since it's nonflammable, they put it to good use! The wings, of course, are mostly for propulsion.
Grandmother Witch has a good head, there. Whose, I know not, but they most certainly had no further need of it. I'm glad to see she put my recipe for jugged fish to good use; too bad even that one can't make lutefisk palatable.

Yeah, the're a reason I don't like working on computers. It was able to fix the images together fine, but the values are wonky in places, and I don't have the patience to try and fix it. My husband thinks I should go bigger and put some large scale paintings into these free frames I got from my gramma, but then I have no idea how I would be able to reach the middle with a scanner? It's such a hassle. I prefer small scale, simpler life.
And thanks! That's exactly what I was thinking with her flight mechanism. And yes her gran-children and great-grand-children flock around her, hoping to get scraps from whatever she eats. But they have to be careful she doesn't eat them by accident.
Lol I'm sure everyone in this picture would love lutefisk. I've been trying to veer towards a younger audience, (you know, so I can illustrate kids books) but I can't help but add creepy elements to everything. What can I say I like my faerie tales Grimm and gritty.

Oh god. Ohgodohgodohgod!
This is amazingly well done! Holy shit, I want a huge honkin' posted of this over my bed, just so I can get lost in all of these details before falling asleep.
I've been staring at this for five minutes straight, and I'm still finding new surprises. How utterly lovely!
And I love the backstory, too! When are we getting a book or a comic?
Thank you so much for sharing your art here. It is such a treat to find it in my inbox.

Thank you so much! That means a lot to me coming from you!
I won't be doing anything more with these characters but I am in the works of illustrating an ugly duckling book. But instead of a swan it's a baby dragon (because of course). I'm thinking of ink drawings like in Ferdinand. I need to light the fire under my butt and get it done.
I'm glad my art can bring such joy, it really motivates me to make more.
