Like J_Wilkins up there, I've my own favourite joke. An Irishman, an Englishman, and a Scotsman were set to be given forty lashes by the Church for heresy, but they're each granted one mercy they can have anything of their choosing on their back to better handle the blows. The Irishman wishes for plenty of grease to get the whip to slide off easier. The Englishman refuses, "I'm tough, I'll take it naked." so he gets his lashes. The same mercy is granted to the Scotsman and he's asked what he wants on his back. "The Englishman."
