-=- Tarot Card XVI - THE TOWER -=-
Regarded as perhaps the worst card to draw in a deck of tarot, the Tower represents upheaval, revelation, and hubris.
To represent this I created a symbolism of hands to represent the common masses. The tower itself represents the work of people who use others to build themselves up. The collapse and the gaping maw of hands is the tearing down of those who build themselves up back down to earth.
I drew the figure in the same pose as Icarus in Jacob Peter Gowy's painting 'The Fall of Icarus'.
The clouds overhead are draw with a subtle brain motif. This is because when the ancient giant Ymir was butchered by the old gods, his skull used to shape the world. His brains make up the clouds of the world and his thoughts are the lightning.
The lightning represents the moment of revelation where once realizes they have built themselves up on a shoddy base. The tower falls because it was never stable in the first place, and part of the hubris is to believe the base is solid.
The Tower is a reduction to what is stable. A stripping down of folly.
On an unrelated note this is the first time in years I've actually drawn a human, even just a doodle of one. Very scandalous~.
