A long-necked shadow passes over them. Judy and Nick sit up and look to the window.
OUTSIDE
Judy and Nick peek around the corner and behind the building. Garnet and Ferret are both looking into Zero's window.
JUDY
Garnet and Ferret?
FERRET
Eep!
Ferret jumps, flails her arms and falls off to the side from the top of Garnet's head. Garnet catches Ferret with her tongue.
GARNET
Thudy?
FERRET
Officer Wilde? (starts to climb down Garnet's neck) What are you doing here?
NICK
We live here.
Awkward pause
FERRET
Oh.
JUDY
That's Zero's window, isn't it? Have you been looking for him too?
FERRET
Umm. . .
GARNET
Maybe.
NICK
And after all this time, you thought to look for him at his home?
Silence. Ferret looks up at Garnet. Garnet frowns down at her and nods.
FERRET
Okay, umm. . . (resumes climbing down Garnet) Now. . . Don't get mad-
NICK
Sweet cheese-
FERRET
Remember when you asked if we had seen Zero, and I told you about the last time we saw him? Well. . . (nervously glances left and right) For the record, that WAS the last time we had seen him. . . AT THE TIME.
NICK
You're saying you saw him after we asked about it. (Ferret nods) How long after?
Uncomfortable pause
GARNET
The following evening.
FLASHBACK
Zero is sitting under a bridge, knees curled up in his arms and staring into the water.
FERRET (O.S.)
Is that. . .?
Garnet's head and neck lower upside down from above the bridge.
GARNET
It is! Zero!
Zero looks up as Ferret slides down and around Garnet's neck down to her chin and leaps at Zero.
FERRET
Stop! (runs up on all fours and clings to his ankle) You've got so much to live for!
Zero blinks his eyes twice in confusion.
ZERO
Huh? Oh. Umm. . . (pats Ferret's head) No, I -- I wasn't going in.
GARNET
What are you doing here? Half the city's out looking for you.
ZERO
A-and if you can keep it that way, I'd appreciate it. (sighs) I don't know what I'm doing. I'm just. . . Wondering where I go from here.
Ferret looks back at Garnet. After a moment's pause, Garnet nods to her. Ferret climbs up Zero's legs and puts her hands on the sides of his muzzle.
FERRET
You're going home. (smiles) To OUR home. (leans onto his nose and pets his eyebrow ridges) I won't take no for an answer.
ZERO
Umm. . . Really? You sure? I'm. . . Probably wanted by-
FERRET
Of course you are! (ruffles his head fur) By us. (climbs onto his head and scratches behind his ears) Tell em' Sis. We always wanted a kitty.
ZERO
Huh? (frowns) Oh. Umm. . . Well, I'm flattered, but. . . Are you sure you want the big blue one?
GARNET
We have a big house with very high ceilings. Trust me, we can find room for you.
Ferret hops down to the ground as Zero slowly rises back to his feet.
PRESENT
NICK
But now he's missing again?
Ferret and Garnet both nod.
JUDY
Since when?
GARNET
(sighs) About a week ago.
Nick's and Judy's eyes widen and jaws hang open.
JUDY
We've been searching for him for two months, and the whole time, he was with you?
FERRET
Don't get mad-
JUDY
I. . . (ears droop) Sweet cheese and crackers.
NICK
That certainly fills in the 'in between' that had us stumped. (to the Towers) So you managed to keep one of the most high-profile mammals in all of Zootopia hidden for two whole months? (they nod) How'd you pull that one off?
GARNET
Well. . . (lowers her head close to eye level) We lived through the Savage Sickness. . . So the prospect of a bunch of heavily armed, large-bodied mammals breaking down the door in search of predators. . . (She nuzzles Ferret) It's something we've had to think about at length before.
Awkward silence.
FERRET
Please don't ask. If another Bellwether comes to power and starts hunting preds again, I'd like it if you didn't have to choose between telling the truth and not snitching.
NICK
(nods) Alright, we'll leave it at that. Thank you.
No, it's never confirmed that Garnet ever hid Zero (or Ferret) inside her belly (or anywhere else on her body). But yes, this is my unofficial head-canon answer to the question.
