“Soon…”
She found herself saying that word very frequently the past few weeks and likely would continue to do so for another few weeks.
“Soon…” Purnama laid her left arm over her bulging belly and cradled it with her right. She had grown big the past few months.
The young Tapiti gasped winced as her unborn child kicked her especially hard in a sensitive place. Purnama barely had time to brace herself against the fence before the baby decided to kick her again. And again. Followed by a flurry of hard punches.
“I swear, this little one is going to start clawing their way out!”
Purnama huffed and stroked her belly. It had been said out of frustration but there was a small part of her, her ancient instincts, who told her that maybe it could claw its way out.
Of course the many hybrid births in the village had long since proven her wrong but considering who put this baby inside her in the first place, that was probably not a invalid concern.
The baby continued to beat at her insides and Purnama’s grimace deepened.
Walking was a good way to calm the unborn down, so Purnama decided to pay a visit to one who had put them there in the first place. It was springtime in the village and the signs were all around the young Tapiti. The midmorning sun shown on her fur and birds tweeted among the branches. In the one above her, chicks cried out from their nest.
Hers was one of several pregnancies to have blessed the village in recent months. While procreation was not dependent on the seasons, it was fitting though. The fields and orchards were bursting with bounty and she too, was swelling with new life.
“And soon,” Purnama took a deep breath and clutched her belly tighter, even though the baby had calmed down within.
“The harvest will come for me.”
She sighed and continued the arduous trek up the slightly sloping hill where the second healing hut was being constructed. Among the sweating bodies heaving lumber and banging tools was the one whose child now grew within her.
The tall, handsome Lycan named Kadek pulled on the ropes causing his muscles to bunch underneath his glistening fur.
As she watched the brown Lycan at his labors, she could not help but swoon as if she was a young kit falling in love all over again. Kadek was a sight to behold.
She was not alone in this sentiment, many females (and a few males) found themselves thunderstruck by the sheer masculine presence of the Lycan. Massive, even for a Lycan, he toward over most of the other males and was nearly wider than most of them as well. His muscles looked more as if they were sculpted from stone and his brown-gray fur shone in the light and was a soft as silk. His eyes were the color of the setting sun and one of Purnama favorite activities was just to stare into them.
Purnama drank in the sight of her mate and stroked her belly. She hoped the child within would have Kadek’s eyes. The owner of said eyes took a deep breath and walked over to the waiting water bucket and dunked a good portion of over his body. Purnama breath hitched in her throat.
To think such a majestic creature belonged all to her and soon she would bear his wonderful offspring!
It made her heart race.
Unlike a lot of herbivore clans, Purnama’s did not avoid contact with Lycans or Zorros at all cost. They actually interacted rather frequently. The land her family lived on was near the mountains and harsher than what most Tapiti would find acceptable. That required trade between the Northern Lycan Clans and it was due to several such meetings the Purnama and Kadek had met. Many youthful nights were spent under the stars exploring each others bodies and whispering promises to one another.
They had mentioned running off together, but would dismiss such promises as idle children’s fantasies.
Then they had heard of the village. Founded by a fellow Lycan and a Lutrai. A peaceful and prosperous place where predators and prey lived in harmony and could raise their offspring in peace.
For Kadek and Purnama, it was the answer to their prayers. The rest, as they say, is history.
Purnama idly stroked her squirming mid-section as she watched Kadek at his labors. When the bucket of water was drained, he glanced over and spotted his mate standing in the distance with one hand draped over her belly and another pressed against her back.
“Purnama!” Striding over to his mate.
“What are you doing out of bed?” He came to a stop in front of her and Purnama had to strain to look up at him.
“The Healer said-“
“I still have a few weeks to go. So calm down.”
It seemed like Kadek was more worried about giving birth than Purnama was! She was the one who had to do all the work! Truth was though…Kadek’s worries eased her own.
Kadek groaned and scooped up his tiny mate in his powerful arms. Carrying her across the village’s main road, toward a copse of small trees. He sighed and nuzzled her.
“What I’m going to do with you?” Pressing his lips to her fuzzy forehead. Purnama smiled and nuzzled into his chest.
“Whatever you want, lover…”
Kadek flushed and grin as he set his mate down on a rock being shaded by a tall tree.
“Isn’t that how we found ourselves in this situation here?” Laying a palm on Purnama’s large tummy. The baby, who had fallen silent with their mother’s walk, suddenly gave a strong kick, right into Kadek’s palm. The Lycan’s eyes widened and his jaw dropped. Purnama smiled softly. Kadek had felt the baby move plenty of times before but whenever something like this happened, he could not help but feel awed.
“He knows me…” He said in an awed whisper.
“Of course she does. You’re her Daddy.” corrected Purnama.
Kadek did not seem to here the latest snipe in the constant argument they’d been having since settling into pregnancy. Instead, the Lycan slid off the rock and fell to his knees. He still had to bend so his face was level with her belly. His eyes bored into it as if his gaze to penetrate the stretched skin and fur.
“Who are you in there?” He whispered to his unborn child. Purnama smiled softly and placed her hand on her mate’s head, stroking his ear. The sounds of spring swirled around them. Perhaps the world was giving them one last perfect moment of peace before the young couple’s world changed forever.
“What kind of person are you going to be?” whispered Kadek again.
Purnama closed her eyes and Kadek followed suit. The both basked in their shared love and the living symbol that would soon take its first breath into the world. A world that was going through its own renewal after the long sleep of winter.
Purnama always loved spring and soon, she and Kadek would love it even more.
Soon their child would be born.
Soon the village of hybrids would have a new member.
Soon they would they would be parents.
Soon…so very soon…everything would change.
The Tapiti and the Lycan wrapped their arms around each other.
And they couldn’t wait!

And that was some very touching story to read. I just feel so sad to imagine that Purnama will have to die in the process T_T
Oh and, there are some inconsistencies, you know you could come and ask me if you needed infos. ;)
