Rufus Raccoon | Registered: Nov 17, 2022 09:36
I don't remember when exactly I got interested in furry but what solidified it was a TV Tropes roleplay about old-timey cartoon characters that never even started. Still, the idea seemed interesting and I started getting ideas for my own character, Rufus Raccoon. He's still something of a work in progress. I enjoy Nintendo games and tokusatsu.

Raccoon Family Plans
Thought I'd do a write-up of my current plans for my fursona family.
Their Setting
The Raccoons are toon beings. I usually consider their world to be similar to that of Who Framed Roger Rabbit (if not literally the same setting), in which toons and humans live alongside each other. Though I have also considered the possibility of instead setting them in an entirely separate cartoon world. One possibility I thought of for the name of the town they live in is "Drawington". I'd like their world to be somewhat timeless, though with a generally mid-to-late-20th-century feel.
Rufus Raccoon Jr.
One of the main characters in the family. An adventurous and imaginative young boy who likes to play outdoors, and has a number of imaginary personas, such as Puck Procyon (space explorer). He also occasionally plays a role in his father's cartoons. His general design as himself is mostly settled, though I might tweak the proportions a bit to get him to the right level of cuteness.
Important sources of inspiration: Calvin (Calvin & Hobbes), Tails (Sonic the Hedgehog), Rocky (Rocky & Bullwinkle), Sylvester Jr. (Looney Tunes), Clyde Bunny (Looney Tunes), various comic strip kids
Rosie Raccoon
Rufus' most significant alter-ego is his "imaginary twin sister" Rosie. Unlike Rufus' other personas, Rosie actually interacts with the rest of the world rather than just being part of fantasy scenarios. She's probably involved in more "girly" hobbies that Rufus doesn't want to take part in as a boy, but also takes part in some of the same kinds of activities as Rufus- in particular, she has her own imaginary personas separate from Rufus'. She has also made some appearances in Rufus Sr.'s cartoons, sometimes even acting alongside Rufus Jr. through the use of toon physics and camera tricks. Exactly how Rufus and Rosie relate as a part of a single identity is something I haven't totally figured out yet- but it'd be reasonable for Rufus and Rosie not to have figured themselves out entirely yet either. In any case, people who know the Raccoons personally will recognize that Rufus and Rosie are physically the same person, but still treat them as separate people in sort of a kayfabe manner. However, strangers will likely assume that they are completely separate children. In terms of design, the one thing that seems pretty clear to me is that her hair tuft will be in a curl. Other than that I haven't really decided on any of her design elements.
Important sources of inspiration: Minnie Mouse (Disney), Amy Rose and Cream the Rabbit (Sonic the Hedgehog), Bugs Bunny's various drag personas (Looney Tunes)
Rufus Raccoon Sr.
Actually the first interpretation of Rufus I came up with, he's now the father of the younger Rufus. He's a big-name cartoon actor, many of whose cartoons take place in various historical eras. He has a flashy showmanlike personality. I might come up with a new design for him to better suit his dad role, though he's definitely going to wear a bow tie still. A recent idea I also had was that rather than being popular now, he's more of a past-his-prime guy who's always trying to recapture his old fame.
Important sources of inspiration: Bugs Bunny (Looney Tunes), Mickey Mouse (Disney), Roger Rabbit (Who Framed Roger Rabbit), Chuck E. Cheese (Chuck E. Cheese's, particularly earlier incarnations), Mr. Peabody (Rocky & Bullwinkle)
Mom (name to be determined)
I haven't thought much about the mom character yet besides being a general "loving mother" archetype, but a recent thought I had while reading old Ozy and Millie* comics is that maybe she should be politically active in some way- though possibly more in relation to local toon politics than anything real-world related. Roger Rabbit had some indication that toons are treated as a minority group and subject to prejudice, so that might be her main cause. For her day job, she's a children's librarian (or possibly something else in a similar vein)
As for her name, while I could just go with the same R. Raccoon theming as the rest, I thought it'd be fun to have her maiden name be a word for raccoon in a different language, and then have her first name be alliterative with that. Something like "Wendy Waschbär", or "Kathy Kijetesantakalu".
Important sources of inspiration: Toriel (Undertale), Moominmamma (Moomin), various politically-active characters from things like Pogo and Ozy and Millie
Radcliff Raccoon
My first idea to reinterpret Rufus after the toon actor concept was as a wacky scientist/inventor, and I've decided to turn that concept into a grandfather for the family. He's also involved in toon show business, but rather than being an actor he builds props and gadgets.
Important sources of inspiration: Dr. Agasa (Detective Conan/Case Closed), Washu (Tenchi Muyo), the Acme corporation (Looney Tunes), Wallace (Wallace & Gromit), the Mythbusters, various contraption-building video games like The Incredible Machine
Other family members
If I get around to making a truesona to really represent myself, I'll probably throw him in as an uncle or something- though he'd be much lesser-known than his famous relatives. I also thought about having a witch in the family, but more recently I figured that a lot of the magical hijinks that she would cause could just as well be scientific hijinks caused by Radcliff's inventions and experiments.
Friends and associates
Rufus and Rosie should obviously have some friends- some friends for just Rufus, some for just Rosie, and some who are friends with both personas. Rufus Sr., being a popular star, would obviously have a lot of friends and costars.
AUs
In addition to their toon versions I think it'd be fun to come up with other media adaptations of the family. Animatronics (not FNAF style but more like real-world animatronic shows based on cartoons) would be a good one, and I'm often thinking about what kind of video game Rufus might do well in.
*yes I know Milo is trans, I'm referring to the title of the original comic
