I can do front flips!
Posted 8 years agoI've been teaching at a circus summer camp for three weeks now, and we're working on a huge variety of skills. I have very few of those skills, but I know the basics well enough to advise people throwing harder tricks. Today I wanted to show an example of the right start to a front flip, which unsurprisingly didn't land. The beginning was good though. Instead of trying themselves they told me to try it again, which I did, and landed! That was my first ever front flip landed! I tried a couple more times by the end of the day and was able to land every single one. I'm so pleased!
My next big trick is handstands. Soon. I'll have them very very soon.

I'm now a Ren Faire Vendor!
Posted 8 years agoI just got back from a big adventure at the Oklahoma Renaissance Faire selling my woodcarvings! It's why I've been posting feather after feather trying to build up a stock. The faire was amazing, I did alright financially, but I heard that you do much better after you've been there more than one year. So I signed my contract to do it again! I was also invited to the Ohio ren faire and the Louisiana ren faire, and I'm going to go ahead and do both of those as well. I guess I'm a rodie now!
I met a lot of really cool people at the faire. One of them is a juggler who's planning on putting me in a 3 person traveling juggling show with someone else he knows. We're going to practice in Ohio to see if we can't pull off the set. I met a person who's come to nearly every one of my live streams (something I'm really looking forward to doing again), and I bumped into
WoLf2Tails on the very last weekend! We talked a lot and it was really cool to meet someone I had already met at MFF! I had met someone else from MFF too, and while that was also amazing I cannot remember his name and even though the experience is fresh I cannot credit his name. I feel bad about that and I'm hoping he chimes in and forgives me.
So now I have to build a cart to show off my wares as a traveling vendor. New adventure awaits!

Joined a Circus! (kind of)
Posted 8 years agoI learned recently that there was a circus training school less than a mile away from my house. I'm very interested in taking classes there once I have the money (we'll see how this summer goes selling my woodcarvings at the Oklahoma Ren Faire), but for the time being I sent them an E-mail asking to coach their summer camp program. I met with them last Friday to teach one of their Winter camp classes as a sort of interview, and then I went again on Saturday to teach two acrobatics classes and take one acrobatics class.
Now, here's the thing. I don't know acrobatics. I saw it when I was in circus years ago, but I never did it. I juggle, and I teach summer camps. I've been doing doing camps for 11 summers in a row now, but never acrobatics. The second day they met with me they had me teaching acrobatics, thankfully with another teacher. Apparently they felt that one class was enough because I'll definitely be working their summer camp and I'll be a sub for the acrobatics coach I worked with last weekend. On one day of experience. I really really hope they don't listen to me teach because I KNOW I'll be saying a lot of stuff that doesn't make a lick of sense.
But I'm in a circus! Mostly. I teach circus to kids. If I'm lucky they'll let me take more classes. And if I'm REALLY lucky I'll make good money this summer and be able to afford their regular classes.

Wood Carving Raffle on Patreon
Posted 8 years agoSo every month I do a raffle on my Patreon. The smaller raffle is for my nose flutes or feather pins, but the big raffle is for a pair of feather earrings or comparable commission. I don't have enough backers for the big one, but I'm only $40 a month away from doing a second small raffle, doubling your chances of winning! Go check it out on my patreon!

The MFF bandwagon!
Posted 8 years agoI know a bunch of you watching me know me from MFF, so I'd like to point out that I will once again be there. This time I'll be well stocked for the artist ally. Lots of feather earrings, feather pins, and nose flutes! The amount of whimsy at my table is going to be dangerous.
Staying in Oklahoma for the summer, need some help
Posted 8 years agoFor the first time I'm trying out taking my wood carving from hobby to professional artist. I just got in touch with the Oklahoma Ren Faire in Muskogee and I really do believe I'm going to succeed there this summer. My biggest issue right now is how I would pull off staying there the two months it runs. I would love a temporary space to stay if anyone has room and would be willing. I like doing dishes if that sweetens the pot for anyone.
If not I'm going to convert a van for temporary living. I'm actually kind of excited about that too. I'm pretty good at living in small spaces.

Trying out being a professional woodcarver!
Posted 8 years agoI spent the past week working every day to build up a stock, and so far I'm really enjoying myself. I'm also enjoying the work I'm making! I assume that's important for the whole motivation thing.
I also learned this new project that's super silly, and I LOVE making them. They're nose flutes. You put it against your nose and use the shape of your mouth to make the note. It's brilliant, and I put a mustache on two of them. They're so funny.
I just put the first surge of feathers on my etsy, so check them out! https://www.etsy.com/shop/SteelKeyCarver
I'm also live streaming a lot more if you haven't noticed. I like to believe people have a lot of fun in my streams, and my evidence is that people say they have a lot of fun in my streams. I'm just going to assume they're not lying. I'm considering having a stream schedule, so I can be more predictable. Anyone have any days that they thing would work best?

Picking my Etsy back up off the ground
Posted 8 years agoHello everybody. Three journals in one month, that must be a record for me!
I'm trying to get my etsy shop started once again. I had someone say the problem might be that I've never sold a piece on there before, so people who find my work aren't willing to risk buying it. I can understand that, though I have sold a lot of pieces online before. I've have no issue with that.
So if anyone's been interested in buying one of my pairs of earrings, if you could do me a huge favor and get it through my shop. It would help me out a lot in the long run.
Thank you!

Possible woodcarving business opportunity
Posted 9 years agoTo start, I have several more feathers ready, that have been ready for some time, that I just haven't bothered taking pictures of. I don't like that part, so that's usually where I procrastinate the most.
This was the first weekend of faire, and I had a whole lot of fun, but one of the coolest moments happened right at the end. I had brought all of my feather earrings to show a person, and couldn't help myself from showing off to everyone who would look. One of those people took me to one of the venders who offered me a spot to sell my work in her new store front she opened up in a suburb. I very well might go into business with her!
Right after that I went to this other vender I really like and excitedly told her the news. She spend the next 20 minutes giving me really sound business advice. I've never really thought of my hobby through a real business lens, so it was a much needed talk. Then one of her partners offered me a portion of her table space in a Chicago shop. So within a half hour I got two offers to go professional with my work. I'm really excited!
So, with that in mind, does anybody have any advice? Anything they know I should look out for? Any help pricing my work knowing a portion of it is going to the store? I only have the roughest of ideas on all things business.

First day with kids at the day camp
Posted 9 years agoThis summer, I'm working at a day camp. I've been working the past week on planning and curriculum for the rest of the summer, but today was orientation. We got to meet the parents and the kids and then play outside.
Turns out (no real surprise) I'm really good at playing with kids.
There were two occasions where I tried to start an actual game. They both failed miserably. But they made up these incredibly complicated games with a crazy amount of ever changing rules and it couldn't have been more fun! I had to run away from mummies through a series of mine carts, get instructions from a lying ghost hologram, find out the mummy was just lonely from being asleep for two million years, save a thunder cat from the castle by traversing the rocky canyon to get the key, have the key stolen, steal it back, save the cat, melt the key in a lava furnace, and several other random side details. It was fantastic.

Need a new place to live
Posted 9 years agoFor those who don't know, I've been living on a Boy Scout camp as the caretaker. It's been a pretty nice gig, but recently it's been really stressful. I found out from the news that they were planning on selling the camp, and no one had bothered to tell me. Then they started changing my job responsibilities and expected me to just roll with it. It just hasn't been very good.
Well, 2 days ago, I had two people I've never met shake my hand and then tell me that they were removing the caretaker position at this particular camp and I needed to move out by April 17th. That's a hard line too. I need to be completely gone by or before that day. Ultimately, I'm pretty happy about it. I didn't want to leave the camp and screw them over, and now I don't have to! They kicked me out and screwed themselves over.
I already have two places I can go that would work, but they're kind of meh. I would very much so like to move closer to Chicago; somewhere by an L line would be really cool. I know a good number of people that watch me here met me at MFF or LAFF, so I'm just assuming a good number of them live close to where I'd like to move. So is there anybody around there who's interested in a roommate?

Finally Got Around to Playing Undertale
Posted 9 years agoI knew I was going to fall in love with the characters, but not to that extreme level. Tears were shed.
I also had this really weird connecting moment to Papyrus. When you date him and say you love him and he admits he doesn't share your love... I've done that. I've had that conversation. I was sitting in my chair, enjoying the silly game, and all the sudden this goofy skeleton is spitting back the painful words I've had to tell others. They hurt. That caught me off guard.
I really want to play the game again. But Flowey asked me not to. He said he didn't want to go through that again. I don't think I can play it anymore. That broke my heart and I just can't bring myself to do another play through. Maybe sometime in the future when my love for those characters need a good polishing.

Delayed MFF Meme
Posted 9 years agoMan I really had a good time even though it felt shorter than years past. Here's my select handful of fun stories.
One time I was juggling and somebody had a corgi stress dog. I got on my knees and started juggling for him. The dog would try desperately to grab the balls out of my hands and his head bobbed back and forth as he tracked them. It was adorable.
It did best in the artist ally on Friday, but I had the most fun on Sunday when I managed to sit next to
Zaezar and
Mimic-Moonrat. There was a Swedish guy (never caught his name) who was giving out some salted licorice hard candy and we were having a lot of fun watching unsuspecting con goers fall for the hook. We found out the candy was terrible first. At the beginning, it tastes like licorice. I don't like licorice, so already it was bad. But what would be a sweet gooey center in an American piece of candy was just a pocket of pure salt in this one. It was so jarring it was painful! I claimed it tasted like broken nostalgia which lead Mimic to say the look you give is like remembering a traumatic childhood experience. She was specific about it though, which I didn't expect, and I laughed so hard I had to take a moment under the table to regain myself. Zaezar wrote a very necessary BRB sign for me.
EDIT: It was
sorcererdale! That's the guy with that candy!
Saturday was great. Firstly I went to a babyfur party and had a blast! For those who aren't babyfurs, I don't understand you. Drinking juice from a sippy cup while watching rugrats as everyone walks around in cute printed cloths is amazing. A guy I know (and I feel really silly not knowing his FA) was putting his goggles on me in silly ways while I made goofy faces back at him. It was a good time.
I left the babyfur party early to go to the Who's Lion is it Anyway panel. I've always really loved this panel, and I love how huge it's gotten. I always feel especially confident because I do this same sort of thing while working at the Bristol Ren Faire all the time, so I have a bit of training in it. That didn't really pan out for me last year because I was exhausted when I went, but this year I did pretty good. I did the "new line" game with the same Swedish guy I sat next to on Sunday and we played off each other very well. After that I got to play scenes from a hat which is always a lot of fun in this group. The favorite line I did was for the alternate ending to Finding Nemo. I said that the octopus helped Nemo find himself. My friend
mattseven7 almost had me to the floor with his line though! He said his for the worst thing to say when being the first person to step onto the moon. A lot of people had already said a bunch and I felt like it was tapped out, until he yells out "I CAN'T BREATH!" It was the last thing I expected, and I loved it.
Over all great con. I managed to take care of myself a lot better this year. I had a lot bigger variety of food and that really helped. I had a slow cooker going on in my room cooking potatoes and veggies throughout the day. That was wonderful.

Quill on Etsy!
Posted 10 years agoAll right, a bunch of people were interested in that feather which is very exciting. It's been very hard keeping a consistent business going with carving, but this might be the item that allows me to turn this hobby into a small business!
I put the feather on Etsy as a first come first serve. I've put some items on there before but they never sold. If this does then I definitely will be making more.

Job started way sooner than I though
Posted 10 years agoI mentioned in my last journal that I'm getting teaching a job in Chicago. I thought it was going to start in mid March or so. Their 3rd quarter ends the third week in March, so I thought it'd be convenient for me to come in right after that. Turns out I was wrong. They're starting me the second. That's this Monday. I'm going to be a real teaching after this weekend! This is all happening way too fast.
Oh, and I found this out on Wednesday. That's when I got all of my forms in that are due today. They might have been due yesterday, their wording is vague. If they don't let me in because I didn't fill out the forms the day I got them I'm going to throw such a fit. I doubt that'll be an issue though. They're pretty desperate for a teacher. They've been without one for 3 weeks now.
Needless to day, I will be unable to go to Fur Squared even though I've already payed for everything. Too much work to do.

Need Help Learning to Draw
Posted 10 years agoMFF left me very inspired to take my art to a new level. I've known for a very long time that this level requires a very strong skill base in drawing, but I've never had the motivation to REALLY improve. I've put some effort into it, but now I want to do it right. I want to learn all the techniques I'll need, how to construct figures, how to get proportions right, perspective, and all that jazz.
That being said, can anyone recommend books, videos, tutorials, or anything like that? I remember a while ago I saw an article about how to learn to be a professional artist without going to school for it. I wish I had bookmarked it.
http://artists.pixelovely.com/pract.....igure-drawing/ I've spent some time on this site which I really like. It's great for learning and practicing proportions. I've learned pretty much everything I know from that site.

MFF Stories
Posted 10 years agoDon't worry, this isn't as TLDR as it looks. Each paragraph is a completely separate story and you don't have to read it all. They're probably not in chronological order either. I'm just writing them as I remember them. Overall, I think this may have been my favorite MFF ever!
As many of you know, I carve rupees and refuse to sell them. They are money, and therefore I will only buy things with them. This lead to several awesome stories this MFF. I pre-ordered a badge from
MLW and was planning on paying for it at her table. Before I could,
Zaezar inquired into how he could possibly get a set of rupees. I had him find MLW, buy my badge from her, and then sell it back to me for a set. That in itself was amazing, but because Zae is so awesome the story gets even better. He came back to me later showing me how he painted the first one. He added shine details and made it freaking gorgeous. He told me how he posted it online and somebody instantly requested to purchase one. He told the person that he couldn't sell it, but he'd buy something with it! I have created currency that actually circulates! I am now a sovereign nation! FEAR ME!!
This next story is also about rupees. A young boy, around ten or so, came to my table and proudly announced that he had money. The first thing he inquired was how much rupees were. I gave him my spiel about how he had to sell me something for them. Without any hesitation he asked with a hint of annoyance, "Can I sell you my money?" No one has ever made that offer before, and it caught everyone on my side of the table off guard. I was uncontrollably laughing for a good long while before I managed to tell him he could definitely sell me his money. He looked so proud of himself and I really hope he remembers that achievement every time he looks at his new currency.
There's a chain mail crafter who goes by Pendragon who I made a commission for a few years back. I carved his really cool symbol for him. This year, he found me to tell me about what he was currently doing with it. He's a part of a large LARP group who just finished a large story ark centered around my carving. It was apparently the key to saving the world. As the story moved, the learned small bits and pieces about me while trying to get their hands on my carving. They learned I was an ancient master crafter with amazing capabilities in magic. They learned I was of a race involving a hybrid between animal and man. They knew my name had a T and a K involved. They kept asking Pendragon about me because they knew the carving was his symbol, but he wouldn't tell. Apparently, they were trying to find me online in the hopes of learning some valuable information to get a step ahead. He took one of my business cards and I really hope I get some ridiculous E-mails soon!
I sat next to
Zinky. in the artist ally on Saturday and Sunday. We came up with the best dumb furry watching game ever. We'd scour badges until we'd see one that had a character turned enough to see a butt (they were never naughty butts, but regular, every day, not naughty butts). Then we'd point at it and yell "BUTT!" We officially titled it butt hunting.
I definitely survived Chloricon 2014, and had an amazing adventure while doing so. I was in a room with my friend
mattseven7 when the alarms went off. I was certainly unprepared to hang out outside for an extended period of time, but I thankfully bumped into
varzen within minutes. He wrapped me in his huge wings that were the warmest, snuggliest blankets I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I spent most of the time outside yelling "For your protection, hug the nearest fursuiter!" and "For the safety of the convention, all fursonas are now penguins! Huddle up!" Eventually we were ushered into the convention center across the street to stay warm. At this point, I really needed a break from people. I had already called it quits for the day when the alarm went off, and I just wanted some time away from the crowd. Me and Matt went off towards the back of the huge, empty convention floor in search of adventure. We found huge piles of rolled up carpets that we ran across. I couldn't do that for long, so we went upstairs in search of someplace cool. Most of the lights were out and it was pretty thrilling adventuring through the darkened, empty convention floors. Eventually, we found a hallway filled with empty couches only two other people had found! We fell asleep on the farthest couch for an hour or so before we went outside to check to see if the issue was solved. The person we found said it wasn't, so we tried to go back up the fire exit to our couch. Unfortunately, there was staff there that told us not to, so we went inside a different door into the convention center. They really shouldn't have let us go through this door, because that's when the real adventure began! The quest to re-find our couch began in the part of the convention center that was under construction. Every room had tuns of rolled up carpet, building equipment, ladders, and very dirty floors. We peeked into a hallway in an attempt to get closer to our couch and found a cop blocking our way through. We managed to get around his surveillance by finding unlocked staff doors in the unfinished rooms. When we got back to the hallway that lead to the couches, the lights were on and the doors were locked tight. We almost gave up there; we had the world and we through it away! Luckily, we tried one more way. We backtracked until we got into this large floor space and followed the wall which we knew had wonderful couches on the other side. Eventually we found an open door that led in. It was the greatest conclusion to one of the greatest adventures I've ever had. We were woken up by cops a couple hours later who aggressively informed us that the Hyatt was safe. They told us to clean our shit up (we had thrown the cushions on the ground for more space), told us they had to escort us out, asked us if we had fursuits and how much the cost, and then asked, "Did you do anything funky on that couch?" He said funky! I couldn't help but laugh, and the answer is of course no.
I have a wicked con crash right now. They always hit me really hard since, as those who know me can attest, I give group events every ounce of my energy. I kind of like how hard con crash hits me though seeing as I never experience post con blues. I'm just too tired and too desperate for alone time to be sad that the convention is over. Doesn't mean I'm excited for next year already though!
As many of you know, I carve rupees and refuse to sell them. They are money, and therefore I will only buy things with them. This lead to several awesome stories this MFF. I pre-ordered a badge from

I definitely survived Chloricon 2014, and had an amazing adventure while doing so. I was in a room with my friend

Old nonsense sayings
Posted 10 years agoI've been thinking recently about the old goofy nonsense sayings I used to have as a kid. Some of them were really strange and now I can't get them out of my head!
I think my favorite at the time was this one chant I would sing while holding my cat. I'd repeat "Rocket launcher kitty! Meow meow meow meow," over and over again in a sing songy kind of voice. I doubt my cat enjoyed it, but she still spent every night on my bed so I think she forgave me.
The most nonsense one was the one we said the most. If anyone remembers the theme song to the commercial "sock'em boppers," it uses the first part of that melody. We'd sing "moshke boo boo, moshke boo boo," on repeat. It had no meaning and we loved it.
The last one is my mothers and my current favorite. When I was little, I miss heard the lyrics to the song "American Woman." I thought it was saying "naked women," and I still think to this day that the lyrics make a whole lot more sense that way. Just imagine a car full of little kids singing, "Naked woman, stay away from meeeeheeee! Naked woman, mama, let me beeeeheee!"
